….almost.
We just missed a double double Saturdays morning. The first half was Barb and Nate on a ridge just a 1/3 of a mile west of where Zach and I had setup. I'll have Nate jump on here later and tell their story.

For Curly and me it was looking like the rest of our archery season with birds just staying away from the decoys and blind. By 7:50 we decided on nap rotations, 3:45AM was kicking our butts. He curled up at the front of the DB and promptly dosed off. About an hour later I was feeling the need to relieve myself and I stood in the blind and started taking my insulated bibs off, then as I took one last look around there they where, a pair of jakes. They where just visible to my far left and at this point with our season nearly over I knew I would try and take one of these birds. Well, they skirted us a little wide and at 45 yards I decided it was now or never. My shot was just low and the pair immediately started clucking. They looked at our setup, as if pissed, at what ever these birds just tried to do to them. They worked their way into 25 yards pretty quick and I was hooked up and ready with arrow number two. Just then Zach wakes with a start and I placed my hand on him to be still. I told him as soon as I kill this Jake he should role over and grab his bow for the second one. It went just like that, except Zach’s shot was just like my first, just low. We where both goofy at this point and even with the miss Zach was all jazzed up, as that was his very first shot at a turkey with his bow. We worked hard at it the rest of the day and had a blast with some close calls but our season ended without another bird.

Ok, finally...

Not really much of a story. Real straight forward, actually. I was walking to a ridge with mom. I still had a decent idea of where the birds would be from all of last years hunts. I had a tree in mind and everything, but when we reached the edge of the woods I looked around and decided it was just a little to late to sit under any birds. My second choice put mom and I against a great big oak 20 yards off the field edge. I told mom to face the river (her back to the field) and I was 90 degrees to her left. When the birds way to our right started responding to my tree yelps, I told her to turn so she could shoot that way more easily. Yeah, that was smart. So five minutes after she turns her shoulders to the right, two toms to her left (straight in front of me) fired up not more than 60 yards away. I should have told her to turn back around, but they were already so close that I just whispered, "Here they come!" A couple minutes later they popped out 15 yards in front of me. I kept my bead on the one in back while the big dominant bird strutted from left to right. I was waiting and waiting for that bird to get to get to the point where I tought mom might be able to turn and shoot. When he got about as far as I thought he would I told her to turn and shoot. Well, what do you know. As soon as she starts to turn, her coat catches on the bark. I'm sure y'all can guess what happened after that. When the coat scratched against the tree, two turkey heads popped up, and just as quick one bird went down. My bead had never left the second bird, and at 20 yards he never had a chance. Mom was able to pop off an awkward 35 yard shot at the big bird, but the lead missed him clean. Frustratingly close to a double. It was awsome.

Anyway, my bird died a minute or two before 6 AM (my earliest!). The beard is 11 1/4, the spurs are 1 2/8 and 1 3/8, and he weighed just under 24 lbs. I guess I'll take that.
