Double Time with My Wife

Sunday morning was one of the most beautiful morning's to be out in the timber, there wasn't any wind and the temperature was just perfect. We got to the big hill where we start out at and didn't put any decoy's out as it was going to be our last day to hunt so we were gonna run and gun. It got bright early and I was expecting some early gobbles but nothing. I leaned over to her and said we should have heard a gobble by now. Just then one gobbled in a spot I wasn't expecting and then there were 3 in the same tree about 100 yds away so we moved a bit closer to them. They gobbled about every time I hit a call. My wife leaned over and said "JB they are in love with you". They moved closer to us but ended up drifting away. So we made a move that proved to be the right move. We circled around the timber down into a big ditch. I brought out the box call to try to locate them. Got an instant gobble. So we moved up the ditch a little bit further. I hit a mouth call and he gobbled. Just then I see one of the gobblers on a dead sprint towards us. So I lay down. The problem is he is on one side of the ditch and we are on the other. So I start to try and figure out how I'm going to make this shot. My wife was stuck behind a tree and she was just watching the whole thing as this was going to unfold very quickly. All of a sudden the gobbler turned and started to running off. I was thinking he saw me move or the cow's had spooked him.

Then I noticed two birds coming out of the other timber and they started to chase him. So I made a last ditch effort and hit an aggressive call. The tom spun in his tracks and was on a mad dash right to us. He crossed the ditch started up the hill. I hit a call and it was all over at 12 yards. My wife was so excited to have watched this she started talking in her normal voice. I turned to her and said the other 2 are coming, which she couldn't see from her vantage point. So I moved a bit and got her in position. The 2 birds ended up being Jakes. My bird was doing a little flopping and they ended up coming over and beating the piss out of him. This went on for like 5 minutes and she couldn't get a shot at one of the Jakes as there was a multiflower rose bush in her way. I got to watch the whole show. So she moved up a bit and then it happened. The first bird went up the hill and he was moving pretty good and she couldn't get on him so she didn't shoot, which I was proud of her for passing. I told her the second bird was coming and to get ready. He was moving a little slower. I hit a couple of clucks up popped his head and she pulled the trigger. Game over.

I can honestly say that it was one of the most rewardable hunts I've been on. This was only her second turkey and I would have to say this one she was more excited than her first bird. The pictures of her smile will prove this. She's had a couple of misfortunes third season and didn't get one killed. Great hunt and to have her kill one on mother's day was icing on the cake.
