Dove Season in Iowa
DOVE SEASON. SF 82, Senator Dearden is unsure if he has the votes to get it out of the SNRC. It will also be dependent on the subcommittee assigned. Senator Black has opposed opening a season in the past.
Please contact SNRC members, if you live in Sen Black's district start hammering on him.

State senator calls for dove hunting season

DES MOINES - An avid hunter in the Iowa Senate wants to take another shot at establishing a mourning dove hunting season in Iowa.

"I think it's time," said Sen. [censored] Dearden, D-Des Moines. "We've got a new governor and maybe we'll get a signature."

Lawmakers approved legislation that gave the state Natural Resources Commission authority to establish a hunting season for mourning doves in 2001, but then-Gov. Tom Vilsack vetoed it.

Legislators were swamped with telephone calls, letters and e-mails from supporters and opponents during that emotionally charged debate six years ago, and that public outpouring likely would be repeated this year if Senate File 82 has wings.

"By far, this will get more letters than all other issues combined. You've got a lot of anti-hunters out there (who) will be going after it," Dearden said. "I know the switchboard doesn't like it."

The doves, he said, are the most prolific game bird in the state.

Proponents of a mourning dove season argue that Iowa is among the few states that don't allow dove hunting. They contend that establishing a hunting season would attract non-residents to Iowa as an economic and tourism activity and would help keep the migratory birds from overpopulating.

"My constituents overwhelmingly do not want to blow little mourning doves out of the air with a gun," said Senate GOP Leader Mary Lundby of Marion, who voted against the 2001 legislation. "Hunters in Iowa are about six percent or less of the population, the rest of us spend millions of dollars a year buying bird seed, looking at the mourning doves, listening to them coo after a rainstorm, and that hasn't changed.

"I think Senator Dearden has promised his gun friends and his dove-killing friends that he'd try again and he's trying again," she added. "I think he'll get shot down."

Opponents say there are plenty of other birds and animals to hunt in Iowa without shooting a species that symbolizes peace. They also point to public-opinion surveys that have indicated a majority of Iowans oppose the change.

Hunting seasons for deer, rabbit, pheasant, turkey, bobwhite quail, grouse and other wildlife in Iowa are authorized by state law and are approved by the Legislature and the governor. State officials can regulate the seasons by setting dates and specifying the type of hunting allowed.

Senate Majority Leader Mike Gronstal, D-Council Bluffs, said he was willing to allow his 30-member caucus to "take a good, fair look at it."

Senate President Jack Kibbie, D-Emmetsburg, was less enthusiastic about the prospects of another dove-hunting debate.

"I hope not. We don't have to do that," Kibbie said. "I think we've got a lot more important things to do than the dove season."

Well she seems pretty open to the idea...

I dont see myself going out on any hard core dove hunts if it passed, but I wouldnt mind snacking on a couple of those little buggers either. I've never tried one, but they do look tasty.

They are very tasty with a piece of bacon wrapped around the breast and a minute or two on the grill… It’s a fantastic way to introduce a new/young person to hunting. A very social event, with warm weather, no need to set absolutely silent and still….

And now the trump card. We all would have to plant dove plots! : ) Sunflowers, wheat, sorghum….. Would work great in CRP away from your timber/deer area. Next to a dead tree and or a power line is the hot set up….

I would like to see it pass….
