DSM area meat locker

sep0667

Land of the Whitetail
With the exception of one deer I have butchered all the deer I have taken. I want to bring mine this year to a locker to have processed. Can anyone suggest a good/clean locker within an hour of the DSM area? I have heard a lot of people really like the Milo locker. Any other suggestions of a good locker?

*Note---I really want to get MY deer back, not a mix.

Any suggestions greatly appreciated.

If you want "your" deer back, then go with a traditional butcher of cuts. Most places do the "community" meat pot for sausage and specialty products.

That said, this is more common with shotgun season deer processing. Shoot an early season bow deer and odds are you get yours back.

On the rare occasion that I don't do my own processing, I have been very happy with State Center locker. Should be within an hour of Des Moines. Anywhere you go, ASK if it will be your deer back. You are the customer & have every right to know.

What are you wanting to have made?

Ammend Packing in Des Moines charges a flat $100 to process your deer. They do traditional cuts and will grind burger plain, with tallow, or with beef added. You get your deer back. Took them three days to do my archery buck.

Ridgeport North of Boone does custom processing but batch mixes everything.

Indianola is the same.

Redfield is the same.

Maxwell is the same.

Malcolm is the same but is my locker of choice for the "custom sheet" that Ammend doesn't offer. They make a delicious sweet bologna that I have not found anywhere else.

Golleys locker in Maxwell makes some of the best sausage and jerky I've ever had come from a locker.

In my opinion, In't Veld is the better of the two lockers in Pella. I used to have a buddy take all my meat up to Edgewood Locker until I was turned on to In't Veld. I love their brats and sliced sandwich meat. Like Ulrich, they call it bologna too. Their hot sticks are solid too. I think I'm going to try breakfast sausage or bacon this year.

I'm not sure if you'd get your own meat back. If during shotgun season, I'd guess no... but if you bring yours in now I'm sure they would. You might want to ask.

Kirkpatricks in winterset will get you your deer back. Least that's what they told me when I started using them about 10 years ago.

In the past if you took at least 50 lbs of boned out meat to Gollys locker in Maxwell you would get your own meat back.Had my meat done there for years before I started doing my own.Always had good product from gollys.

Thanks for all the replies and suggestions. I've heard the Milo locker mentioned a lot of the years. I gave them a call today and was told that they can give me my own deer back. The only thing that would not be my own would be if I wanted any sticks or ground meat, then that would be a mix. I'll give them a shot.
