I could not get out to roost any birds Friday night. I was up bright and early Saturday and out in the woods by 5:00. Last week I was out a little late with my boy during youth season. My son was up to the shack also but did not want to tag along with me this morning. (The couch was too comfortable).
It was a beautiful morning and I was just happy to be a part of it and away from work. I set up in a little corner that is a favorite for turkeys and deer alike.
I did not hear any gobbles off the roost so I put out my hen decoy and put a jake decoy right behind her. This set up has always worked great for me. I then found a nice tree a stayed put.
I heard some hens off to my right so I figured they must have a tom in tow so I tried some cuts and yelps. The hens started cutting back and then I heard more hens out in front. I knew there had to be a tom in one of the groups. There was a slight hill in front of me so I could not see but could her the birds. About five minutes after my first series of calls I heard a tom gobble about 150 yards to my left. After two or three gobbles I could tell he was coming to either the birds out in front of me or to my setup. I was hoping he would follow the route he was on and see the jake.
After about ten miutes and another three or four gobbles I saw him to my left out in the field. I quit calling and as soon as he saw the jake decoy
he ran the last 50 yards. I thought he was going to knock the jake over. He stuck his fan right in the jakes face shielding the jakes view from the hen. I had to let the tom step to the right of the decoys and then let him have it. I looked at my watch 6:31 A.M.
He weighrd 24 lbs., 10 1/2" beard and had 1 1/8" spurs. Excellent hunt but now what to do with the rest of the day?
I enlarged a food plot and disked up the rest of my food plots.
Sorry but no pictures. I could not find the digital. I left it at home. When I got home I saw I had it in my bag.
O well I will not forget it next time.
