Does it seem a little early for scrapes? I found several very fresh scrapes yesterday, it just seems a little early. I wounder if it is the weather.

It may be early and I'm done for the yr, but that doesn't mean I won't visit this site or the woods anymore!!!! I found a fresh scrape line on the field edge that i was hanging my stand in Sat. a.m, it may be early but they're scraping here too!

Nope not to early at all. I was out 2 weeks ago and I probably found a half dozen. I've noticed in the past few years i've found scrapes in my area usually show up in late september.
Good hunting

no it's not to early. you definetly want to pay attention to these scrapes when thet rut kicks in. i have found them as early as late august.

although, i don't know really why they scrape this early, i guess it's just some form of communication, who knows? one thing i do know is from past experiences and what i have been told, these scrapes are very important when the rut kicks in. i have been told to make mock scrapes in late summer, and not wait until the bucks start scraping, to make my mock scrapes. something about, that these are scrapes that the bucks in the area are already familiar with when rutting activity picks up and if you wait 'til they start scraping, to make your mock scrapes they will a lot of times overlook your scrape to get to the one there familiar with. make sense? it's hard to explain!

i have a friend who puts out mock scrapes in mid-august and deer use them like crazy, he has also taken 4 great bucks on opening day because of this. i myself have put out some scrapes in the past, pretty early, and the bucks have used some of them like crazy all year and some don't get used much at all. but the ones that didn't get used much were definetly brought back to life during the rut, while the ones i made on the way to my stand in the mornings, covered up with leaves! probably because they were unfamiliar!

so keep these scrapes stored in the back of your noggin'! try them out during the rut even if between now and then they get covered with leaves and are left alone, i'll bet you that atleast a couple of them become hotspots! good luck

It does seem early--but i seen a fresh scrape sat. and another in a different area today. This morning i saw a buck tending a doe.She really acted like a doe in heat--trying to get away from the buck, the buck even went back to chase a couple more small bucks back
before he would go to catch up with her.

He was just a 6pt. but there was another bigger buck picked up on her 2-300 yards down the tree line.

Needless to say that is where i put up
my DBULL blind for for the next couple days.
I know there is at least 10 bucks in this 60 acre patch of private ground.
I've seen 6 bucks earlier all ranging from 125 to 160-170.
They are real hard to hunt very nactural
and spooky they head for the trees when they see a vehicle, even a 1/4 mile away.

I set up across the road in some other trees as they head for the river to drink, hopeing one gets across before dark
or stays too long in the morning.
Did have a couple does make it over tonite
walked up to less than 10 yards---still got to wait for a buck, hopefully one of the big ones.

Not early at all, they normally start popping up where im from as soon as they're in hard horn but dont get real noticeable until late 2nd week or 3rd week of Oct.

I found a fresh scape this Saturday and it was underneath overhanging branches. One to keep an eye on. I think the scrapes with overhanging branches are the ones to watch "hunt by". I believe most scrapes are made at night and are territorial sign. I have a book that makes the quote "scrapes tell you when to hunt, rubs tell you where to hunt." We had some freezing nights and this probably triggers bucks to scrape and rub. I have photos of bucks making rubs on Oct 6th. It's October and it's sign time!
