What do you think or know about the facts on antler development, after a deer has taken an injury. What effects does it have for next years set.

Two years ago on opening day of shotgun season I shot a small buck because he was limping. He had a little spike (about two inches) on one side and a regular forked anatler on the other side. I couldn't find any visible injuries on him after I shot him, but when I butchered him, I found someones two blade expandable broadhead that had opened and had been in him since the year before. It had entered behind the shoulder at almost a facing away angle and was inbetween the shoulder and the rib cage. The spike antler was on the opposite side of the injury (like a stroke). I felt sorry for him walking around with that in him for a year. Plus his antlers would never have amounted to much so I was glad I culled him.

Kat, you are alright!!!! I would be willing to bet that the majority of us would have let that buck go and continue suffering.... You have my complete respect!!!!

i'd have put him down also. same thign happened to me 2 muzzleloader seasons ago, a 125 class 8 point came by with a leg dangling. after he died we noticed a slug hole through his hock area. he was green inside.

YUCK.

Aw, gee. I wasn't trying to sound like a hero, I was just commenting on the injury and resulting antler development. I'm sure a lot of the guys here would have done the same.

Hes right Kat, id of let him walk, i had a small crippled 6 pointer almost every night under my stand 2 years ago and didnt take him.He couldnt hardly walk but I didnt wanna tag him so I let him go.Good job!!!

I found a wierd thing two years ago in a roadkill. He had a real decent 5 point side probably 50 inches, and the other side he had about a 3 inch spike, it wasnt broke off, it had grew that way.Since he was run over I couldnt tell what caused it but Ive never seen one grow like it before

Little surprised by your decision not to tag that wounded buck. I can respect that decision, but I would have at least put it out of its misery. I have only been put in that situation one time, luckily enough it was a shooter buck for me anyway. Its right antler sporting four points was dangling by a thread of fur. From what I could tell it had been hit by a car having 2 inches of skull attached to the antler and its eye swollen shut with gang green present. I called an officer to see if it would be alright to eat, he said as long as the nasty is contained to its head it'll be alright. Boy was he on the money, best jerky I have ever tasted!
