EHD and Food Plots

Wonder if Egyptian wheat may accomplish similar? Very similar from the looks of it.

My first thought is captive deer vs wild deer. Second thought is dexamethasone is a steroid given to humans to reduce our inflammatory response. How is this delivered to the deer? Inoculated in their feed (p.o.) or injected (I.V./I.M.) Does it have the same effect on deer as it does humans? The author states it took him awhile to find he right dose which begs the question on delivery of the dexamethasone not to mention pre or post exposer.

The only section of the article I found of merit were the traps. Outside vs inside of the sudan grass. The article does not differentiate between midges and/or mosquitoes or any other insects in the traps. Perhaps this study does have merit, but I'd like to see the methodology and peer review.

Bonker,
He administered it by injection. I agree with it needing more data and reviews. However, I just wanted to share the thought of creating areas for the deer to get away from the insects.

Wonder if it has to do with the prussic acid?

That would be the "pits". Are ya thinkin zyclon(sp) or a specific gas the grass gives off? A nonlethal derivative of hydrogen cyanide? Knowing full well that I prolly won't understand the answer.

Not a bad idea, just not sure it is 100% attributable to the sudan grass or a close relative there to.

I'm guessin the dex was weight based. Still a lot of variables. The stress to the deer of being subbed enough to inject it is a big variable.

In the wild I wonder if deer just go to a hill top where there isn't any mud and perhaps a breeze that keeps the bugs at bay.

BUT, the idea still has merit. Thanks for sharing.

I'm thinking that if the prussic knot is so great, the acid must be killer. ;):D

Gnats are daytime, not nocturnal. I have read that gnats/midges are the vector for EHD, never read that mosquitoes are, not saying it can't happen.

So if midges are daytime, Sudan gives off gases at night, just doesn't seem to jive to me.

If the deer are eating Sudan, then maybe the prussic acid might come into play?

Definitely warrants further intensive studies.
