Elk?

I was told today that 2 elk had gotten out of an enclosure around the Glenwood area (SW Iowa) and that the local hunters were keeping their eyes peeled so they could harvest them. Is that legal?

I'm usure of the legalities but the same thing happened in Jasper County several years back. He survived for at least 4-5 years. Many people saw him, photographed him, and I was with a buddy when he found his shed. We know of two sheds found. I am unsure what happened to him but if he was harvested, the secret was well kept. It was fun knowing he was there and hoping for a glimpse. Good luck!

pretty sure it would be illegal. I asked if shooting a bear is legal, and it's not. I know he said he said moose too and I believe he said elk. There have been several bear sightings up here, that's why I asked. Plus, just across the river in Wisconsin there are some wild hogs running loose and I guess they are fair game since they are not a native species.

They were either let loose or got loose from someone around the gays mills area. There was an artical in the Wisconsin paper about it a month or so ago

I was told of a Bull elk that escaped enclosure in Dubuque Co after a creek flash flooded. The story was the owner wanted it killed because his insurance company would not pay him until it was captured or recovered dead. (they must have thought he sold it) Never heard the end of the tale.
A fella I worked with shot a 3X3 mulie (not a cross) near Hanover Il back in the early 90s. He took it to a check station, the DNR took it's temp and weight. He was allowed to keep it and was never issued a citation of any kind. The statute read he could shoot ANY antlered deer. Whooda thunk

I wonder what would have taken place if it was a real big one. No word of where it may have come from ever surfaced either.
I would think killing an escaped elk WOULD be legal. I'm sure it would be tagged or tatooed for ID purposes. Why would it become the property of the state?

I also know of a Bull Bison that was shot dead after it busted out. Mean bastard!

I did not get this first hand from the game warden, but... Last year a bear had wandered to the North side of Dubuque and then must have gotten right in the head and went back north. We also had an elk running around our area. Many people saw it and I think somebody shot it. All of a sudden it just wasn't seen. Anyway people had asked the DNR about it and what would happen if they shot it. The response was shocking to me - Iowa doesn't have any rules reg's about black bear or elk so they could not have fined them. The elk was probably from a game farm (it had a tag in its ear) and the owner would probably have been able to press charges of some sort. But the black bear didn't belong to anybody and was "wild." The DNR said that after this he was sure that a few new rules would be added.

Kinda makes sense, but like I said I do not know this to be 100% true. Just sharing is all.

Bear and Mountain Lions

If I recall right, after so many lions and bears where seen a couple of years ago that the State Legislator tried to make it Illegal to shoot them. It DIDN'T pass and it is legal to shoot them. They are classified the same as Coyotes. Unless this has changed in the last year.

Re: Bear and Mountain Lions

If these Elk came from where I think they did, it's a high fenced hunting ranch. They lost some sort of an exotic animal a few years back and it met the same fate as the Elk probably will. My hunting ground is a ways away but who knows! It would be cool to see a bull come crashing through your set-up in Iowa!!

Re: Bear and Mountain Lions

A few years back I had a 10 yard shot on a huge racked buck but then saw a tag in it's ears and spots on it's body. Ended up being a pen raised fallow deer that had escaped from an enclosure only 1 mile from my area. I contacted the local Game Warden and was advised that I would have been completely legal to shoot it as Iowa tags only say "deer" and do not specify what type. I don't know how this applies to elk since they arent really "deer." As far as the owner of the deer pressing charges, I was told by the warden that the owner would not claim it. He told me that most won't because if it is hit by a car, the owner is responsible for damage, medical bills, and even law suits, just like any other livestock.

I wonder how common it is for a loose elk to seek out others of their own kind and get captured again. (especially during the rut) The reason I say this is because I am pretty ignorant of elk ranching, but even I know of an instance quite a few years back where an elk rancher in northern Iowa had a stray 3 year old bull elk show up outside his enclosure. The rancher did eventually get it coralled, and as I recall even though everyone was pretty certain it escaped from another ranch somewhere in Iowa, it did not have any markings on it and no-one claimed it so the DNR told him to keep it.

Iowa does not have an elk season and it is illegal to harvest a species without a license/permit to do so. Hopefully a game warden can confirm this information, but without a specific tag, I would not harvest the species. Just my 2 cents

We need to be clear on one issue are we talking about an aminal that has escaped confinment or an animal of "unknown origin" (ie does it belong to the state or a private citizen?)
