European Mount?

I've had the buck I shot and a big old 3x3 that I found dead shed hunitng soaking in buckets for a couple months.....masceration I believe it's called. Anyways, I yanked the buck i shot out the other day and it's basically clean but the nose bones have fallen off and it seems to be weakening throughout the skull. Is it time to pull it our for good, glue things back into place and bleach?

I have heard that bleach is bad on them, but I can't back that up with any scientific fact. What some people do is get some sort of taxidermist paste that whitens up the bone.

Bleach is bad on the bones. Makes them very brittle. McKenzie or Van Dykes Taxidermy supply makes a bleaching agent that you mix 50/50 with Hydrogen Peroxide. Thats what I use on all of the work that I get in. It turns it very white and looks real nice.

I use the masceration method on all my finds. I usually pull them out when just about all the flesh and hide has rotted off. I then powerwash them out. If anything is left I put them back in the bucket for another couple weeks. When they are completely clean I use regular hydrogen peroxide to whiten them up. Just set the skull out on a nice sunny day and pour the perixide over them several times, usually two days gets them good. Also pour it all into the cavities of the scull to get the stink out.

The sculls sometimes seem pretty loose but when they dry out they solid back up. Also, Pulling it earlier helps keep it intact better.

Makes a nice finished product with out the work or $.

Hope this helps.

I've used hydrogen peroxide and Hair Bleach. I think the formula is in a thread on here somewhere. I'll try and find it.

just use hydrogen peroxide, the 40% stuff, or whatever..... bleach will make things brittle as mentioned, but will also coninute to detierate it after it has dried. i learned the hard way with this!!!

HP will make it white as snow in about two days. put the nose bones in there with the skull and after everything is dried off, glue them back on!

good luck!!

keep in mind that the sunlight will also bleach up the antlers if left in the sun, I would hate to see those northern chocolate antlers turned white

My buddies dad usually does mine for me. He said he gets hair bleach from a salon. I think it's some sort of paste. They come out very white. Good Luck.

Wrap the antlers in tinfoil to keep them from bleaching in the sun.

Another thing I like to do with mine... I cut the brain cavity in the back at an angle, drill a hole through it and screw to the wall, this holds the european mount at an angle without having to buy a plaque. If you drill the hole bigger than the screw head then taper it upwards it allows you to take the skull off the wall and hold it once in awhile without removing the screw.

these antlers were already bleached a bit as he was found dead while shed hunting

If I peroxide it, wrap the antlers, and put it in the sun, should I be good to go?..And glue things together where necessary I guess. Time will tell.

Kaare,

Iu've never done one in the sun. If you use the hair bleach method i think its 1/3 powder bleach and 2/3 developer you don't need to put it in the sun.
