Polk County Hunter Injured in Fall from Tree Stand

DES MOINES - An Altoona man suffered serious injuries after falling from a tree stand Sunday morning Oct 31.

Doug Eshelman, 48, had reportedly just stepped on to his tree stand southwest of New Virginia in Clarke County and was starting to sit down when he fell approximately 15 feet at 7 a.m. on Sunday. He was not discovered until approximately 2 p.m. Sunday and was air lifted to Iowa Methodist Medical Center in Des Moines.

Eshelman was not wearing a full-body harness at the time of his fall. He was archery hunting for deer.

Hunters using tree stands for hunting are reminded of the importance of using full-body harnesses to prevent falls, said DNR Recreational Safety Officer Allen Crouse.

"Hunters should also have a cell phone on them so they can call for help if needed," Crouse added.
