Fan mounting

I am going to do my own fan mount this spring and was wondering if there are any tricks out there to make it look nice.

I figured out last year that you cant let the fan sit out and dry for 2 days before you mount it. I also had a problem getting the feathers to come back together and look nice. Maybe some hair spray and a soft brush would work?

I don't understand what you mean by not letting it dry for two days, do you mean you just left it folded together and it dried? What I do is take out all the meat in between the quills and then use a large piece of cardboard and pull the fan out to 180 degrees and put maybe a dozen pins into the area that used to have been around the quills. I then use borax very heavily and just let it dry hard for a week or so. Once dry use a little bondo (auto body filler) on the area that you had borax. I never use any products on it and I think it comes out pretty good just leaving it natural. Good Luck with it!

I use bondo after the fan is dry also, it does a very good job. Make sure to press it between the quills just above the dried flesh area.

You can steam the feathers to get them back in shape. I do this occasionally for my arrows and they reshape nicely.

Two part epoxy works pretty good for me. The kind that comes in the mixing syringe. It's thin enough to flow into all the nooks and crannys so you don't have to smear it in like bondo. Sets up hard and doesn't move. When it hardens it is no thicker than the fan. Be careful not to use too much though, like I said it flows.
