Farm Improvement

Along with the logging project and replanting some swamp white oaks in areas of the cut.

I have a 5 acre area on the west side of my bottom ground that is currently enrolled in CRP. It's kind of a buffer strip between the Ag fields and the timber. Currently the CRP isn't doing me much good it's not great cover for the deer, it lays down in the winter time.

So when the contract expires, I'd like to plant something to help shelter the woods, and be great habitat. And be a good screen for me when I access the woods to hunt.
From watching a few guys on the internet it would seem the 2 obvious choices would be Switchgrass or Giant Miscanthus.

Or maybe both and I could plant them in Blocks. I have some time to figure out what I want to do. But I'd like to get figured out what my plan is. And hear other people's experiences.

So what has worked for you?

Switchgrass with some brushy pockets or wide spaced cedars and Switchgrass. Especially if it faces south.

When it expires…. Could reenroll in a taller dense mix that has more switch or do something like a tree planting CRP with shrubs, cedars, etc. But ya, I’d agree a good thick mix would be Switch if u just wanna get to work…. For a 5 acre area… straight switch would be an excellent buffer, screen & some other benefit of course (thermal, birds, some bedding, etc).
