Feeders

I'm thinking about putting out a feeder or two for part of the off season. With the high price of corn, what kind of feeder do you recommend that won't waste feed and is battery friendly? Or do I want a bunk type feeder? Any ideas?

Bunk type feeders are way to wasteful, mostly because they hold water and the grain ends up spoiling. I would go with a spreader type feeder, that is elevated. You can control how much and when the feed goes out, and save a lot of money instead of just dumping on the ground.

Moultrie feeder units are on sale right now at wal-marts close to me. Might check around close to you, units usually run around 40 bucks.

:way: ;)

Any thoughts on the ones made from PVC tube and attached to a post or tree? Sort of look like an upside down snorkel?

No matter what type of feeder you consider; you may need to deal with critters like squirrels and coon. I have a 200lb. EZ Load feeder made for Cabela's. You set the times and duration of the feeding, and it's very acurate. After the first six months of use; i needed to put a cage around the feeder unit that spreads the corn. Racoon figured out how to climb the ladder for filling the bin, and reach over to spin the arm that discharges the corn. Squirrels are even better at hanging upside down on the unit and getting all the corn they want. There is also a plastic funnel inside the bin that feeds the arm that throws the feed. Unprotected; squirrels easily get to the lower part of the funnel, and chew it up. I've never used bunk or gravity feeders, but i'm sure you would be spending alot of money feeding critters other than deer. You wouldn't believe the number of coon in your area until you steup a feder!
