Fell Just Short

One of my goals this year was to hunt 90% of the days in the early split of the archery season I will end at the 89.55% mark hunting on 60 of the 67 days. I will have logged close to 350 hours in the stand. Seeing three mature bucks during shooting hours on stand and harvesting one of them. Wasn't as much action in my stand as there was last year but I could see more happening in the bean field next to the cornfield. If the pattern continues next year should be an awesome year with beans in the bottom.

On a good note I did successfully harvest my first buck, harvested a doe, and also learned a lot. Along with managing to have many firsts. Looks like I will be out in the late season to fill my last any-deer tag. Thanks to every one for all the help and constructive criticism. I have learned a lot from this site and believe it has helped in my success this year along with the webshowsprovided by Midwest Whitetails and Todd.

Good luck to everyone still hunting and beginning their seasons in the next few weeks.

Man! That many hrs in the stand? I thought my usual 80 hrs was a lot. What do you consider a Mature Buck?

I wish could do that!!! School gets in the way most of the time, mainly go out on weekends!

College gives you a lot of free time, well it did for me. I don't know what you will have to do for your practices. I put all my classes in the middle of the day in the fall semester so I can sit morning and evenings.

:D That's great. 8am monday and wednesday he's outside Lush auditorium, like clockwork. Always wondered how he could be in two places at once. Has to have a twin brother :thrwrck:

Something to think about. Spending that much time in an area can burn it out. I will hunt a couple days in October but dont wanna burn myself or the area out. Once November hits is when its go time. I'm not trying to push my ideas on you but just trying to give some experience. Once I was the exact same way and now that I have switched tactics my time spent in a tree has been better as far as seeing deer.

A colleague has a sign posted in front of his class that says: "Dear Students, I know when you are texting in class. Seriously, no one just stares down at their crotch and smiles."

Lol Yes just outside Lush. Sitting next to the wall normally. Most of the time I only hunt mornings on Tuesdays, Thursdays, and Fridays

Not for this guy :( I've had less time to hunt in college than I did in high school. I think I have put in MAYBE 30 hours this season, 20 of which were on the 9th and 10th of November. Cross-country and track get in the way big time, 4pm practice Monday through Friday with meets nearly every Saturday. I know I could just quit running but I wont get these opportunities ever again, deer will still be there after I graduate. Just have to make the most of each sit when you don't get many!

What part of Iowa, ya see all these mature bucks? Just curious. In my area I see mostly 2yr old bucks with potential. Three yrs on up is mature to me. all areas are different. Coarse if I sat 300 hrs might see more. Coarse that would sorta burn out my 40 acres.

Story County. Yes I spread my time across 8 different properties across the county. I also have really great neighbors all around my main properties who are all managers and not many farmers allow shotgunners in the area
