Filming Turkey Hunts

Well I started filming deer hunts a few years ago, but last year I really got into filming turkey hunts. I think its the coolest thing to records toms or even hens on film! And the audio of pissed hens at 10 yards clucking at you is awesome! I was just wondering when your filming by yourself do you guys leave your vidoe cameras on from the time you set up on a bird until you havest the turkey or the bird walks off 20 to 45 minutes later withe a flock of hens. I've been doing that and then just going back and edditing the film when I record it on a vhs tape. But the problem is it eats the batter up, and when you hunt a whole day you risk the chance of a battery dying right in the middle of a hunt. I know I could just solve this by someone going with me to tape, but when thats not possible you got to make due at what you got!
Even though I've never had an actual kill on tape, I think its the coolest thing ever to go back and watch the hunts over and over again!

Good luck and Good hunting

Take your brother in law with you.

When you see a turkey say to him "Turn on the camera or I'll tell you how I got to dating your sister."

When the turkeys disappear say to him "Ok turn it off or I'm not giving you any of the ice cold beer I have in the cooler in the pickup."

Works like a charm!

What the heck is that?!

To show how much of a geek I am. That's Tron which was a movie back in the 80's. Looks like he's smuggling some plums in there!

...I was thinking about trying to tape my friend hunting this weekend...how close do the birds have to be to hear them on the video?...how well does the camera work in the early a.m. in a DBL Bull?...do i need to camo/blacken the camera?...

...why do I fear that I will now have Tron Nightmares?...

hershy here is what i use, its a samsung scd-67, i can get birds on tape gobbling around 150-200 yards away on a good windless morning. i wouldnt think in a blind you would need to really camo it, but i did, just used gun tape and where there is silver i used permanent marker to make black, except the play button etc, in case i ever need it for something else

If you don't want to wrap your camera in tape, I just drape camo cloth over it and cut our for the lens, zoom, and power on off switch. Just make sure you have not glossy showing! And with cameras now adays, early in the morning, you can turn on the back light, so it brightens up the picture in your camera. And you can also play with the exsposure setting to get a good picture!
Good luck and good hunting

If I can see the turkey the cam can hear it. I hunt out of a DB and have not done anything to conceal the cam. It is nice and silver - just like the wife wants to keep it. Never have been busted yet and muddy and I have gotten away with a LOT of movement in the blinds. Keep windows behind you closed and it won't be a problem. Keep the cam away from the open window and it won't be a problem. The cam will pick up more light than you would think. Usually while I video it is hard to make stuff out in low light conditions. Get the video home and play it on the tv and you will be amazed. That little view finder in black and white doesn't do much. I have had fun even though I wasn't able to get my kill on video. My tripod is messed up pretty bad - think I will need a new one for next season. Good luck.

I usually hunt out of a blind so I can get away with movement. This spring I taped 4 birds coming, hand held so I can move the camera and keep close. Even got some good head shots, gobbling shots and spur close-ups. Finally decided to shoot one (with bow). The hit bird and one other ran out of sight. I called the other two back and taped them for 55 minutes until I ran out of tape. They still stayed. I took a nap, woke up and they were still there. Since I wanted to try to call one in for my dad later in the season and I don't like to cause any more disturbance than necessary I finally was able to sneak out of the blind. When I came back an hour later to pick up my bird amazingly they were still in the area. Blinds are great for bows and taping.
