I was finally able to fill my doe tag Saturday night with a nice mature doe.It was the strangest deer hunt I have ever been on.
It all started when my boy and I got to our place to hunt and someone was already in there.
We were forced to hunt in an area that I hadn't really hunted or scouted before.
I put up my sons stand (chain on with a climbing stick) and got him set up.i then looked for a tree to put my climber in.Guess what,no trees with out low branches.I finally opted for one tree that was low but had good back cover.Just as I put the last pin in the stand here comes a doe running up and stopping at 15 yds.
I slowly ducked behind my tree and grabbed my bow.As I peeked around the tree I could see she was looking away from me.I drew, moved around the back of the tree, put the pin on her chest and released.I heard a tick(arrow hit a twig) and then a thunk (arrow hitting the deer).
I gave her 30 min and started on the trail.I found my arrow had passed through, red blood, fat on the arrow,no foul smell so I continued on the trail.Good red blood and then up jumps 2 bucks and my doe.
She hobbles up the hill from me moving pretty slow, but moving.
I stop and wait watching the 2 bucks up the hill from me exhibiting the strangest behavior I have seen. They are both walking in circles ,pawing at the ground over and over again.
The wind was right so I belly crawled to within 30 yds of the bucks. One of them walked off but the other one kept walking in circles, kneeling down, pawing and rooting at the ground.
I was still down hill from him and couldn't see what he was pawing at.It then dawned on me that maybe he was messing with my doe.I stood up and walked towards him.As I crested the hill there layed my "dead " doe .Now it gets weird. The 6 point buck sees me and instead of running away the hair stands up on his back and he starts to come towards me.I had an arrow on the string and pulled back thinking that I was going to have to defend myself from this little devil. He gets 10 yds from me and all of a sudden my doe jumps up and runs away.He takes off after her.She runs 30 yds and drops again. He get to her and starts pestering her.I sat down trying to figure what to do.She then gets up and goes another 30 yds drops,he pesters her again. She then gets up and crawls under a fence and goes over to the neighbors (that I don't have permission to hunt). There she crawls into a big log pile that had been bull dozed. He jumps up on top of her and trys to "get er done",he was riding her ,kicking her,and even poked her with his antlers. Now I am sick. The deer is shot too far back due to the deflection, she's on posted ground and this buck won't let her lay still to stiffen up.
I opted to pull out ,drive to the neighbors to ask permission and try to get ahead of them for a final shot.
The neighbor was very gracious and let me take my bow in.I waited another hour, walked in 100 yards a head of where I last seen them heading. As I came over the edge of a ditch there stands my little buddy and my doe all stretched out with her head on the ground.Again the mean little buggar starts to come at me.Again the doe comes back to life, but this time I was finally able to get an arrow into the lungs and finish the job.He finally had enough and ran off.
This was my first doe with a bow in 24 years of bowhunting and one hunt I will never forget.
