First Day of Youth Season...kinda sucked.

Well, so far! Here's what's been goin' on!

5:00am: Ready and packed for the day.

6:50am: Out and sitting in a fence line, my Dad didn't let me go to the place I wanted with him. EDIT: No offence to my Dad but the Buck below would have gone right where I was sitting.

7:30am: 10pt Buck (11pt) came within 10 feet behind me, I couldn't really do anything because he was downwind of me. He was sniffing a tree limb and then looked at me and ran, I took a shot and missed at 20 yards. (To high, the gun is sighted in at 50 yards).

8:30am: 3 Does and a button buck fawn, the button buck looked at me for 2mins ran.

9:00am: Sat down and the button buck came 2 feet of me and sniffed me! Walked right beside me then looked back and ran. Pet maybe? I lost my trail camera SD card at this point in time.

9:40am went to another property and saw a Buck in a creek snuck up 40 yards on him and shot him...in the shoulder when he was turned didn't hit any vitals prob. He's a small 8pt maybe 100 class?

10:10am: Chased him out of a bed of blood and then ran into corn saw the hole in his shoulder and no exit wound :( that means I must have shot him through the shoulder and it came out of his chest. Well, I'm going to blood trail him this afternoon if it doesn't rain anymore. There's always tonight to get one of the big Bucks.

Well, I still have until the 2nd and I already had two shots at two nice Bucks.

Bummer, he must of been quartering away pretty hard and the shot was too far forward, you are thinking? What gun were you useing? Was he still bleeding when he jumped out of his bed? He may be laying dead in his next bed. Dont give up yet 1/2 an hour may not have been enough time for him to expire.Good luck.

We are not hunting mornings so we are kicking off the season this afternoon.

I wouldn't go out hunting tonight, he very well could be laying dead somewhere. Such throughily before shooting another one.

I found a lil' blood but doesn't look bad, I was using a 12ga, theres no blood were he bed. But what really made me angry was I just went out alone to trail him and I didn't have a gun with me or my Dad and the biggest wild Buck I've ever seen alive (15pt 170s class typ) was standing 50 yards away coming right at me. I desided to let him go bed and he did so maybe at 3ish I'll head out and spook him out of his bed. I looked pretty hard for this other Buck (the last 3-4 hours) and didn't even find blood other than from at the beginning where I shot him. Like you said I prob shot to far foward. May I remind you this isn't where I hunt normaly.

EDIT: Not finding a blood trail might be due to the rain :/

And how did this day suck? Sounds good to me, other than losing the buck.

And my 16gb trail cam card :( but I did get a chance at a 7pt and a 6pt in the blind last night. Going out in a few mins with my Dad :D

If I had 2-3 opportunities at shooters in a day, I'll call that one heck of a day! Heck, I'm reasonably happy going out and seeing no deer but getting a show from other critters like turkey, pheasants, fox, bobcats, etc. Sounds like a tremendous hunt to me and you better be tracking the heck & searching like crazy for that buck you shot. Grid searching, getting buddies to help, etc- you gotta scour the farm to make sure, a buck hit with a 12 gauge in the shoulder area ain't gonna be doing so good. Go get him.

Went out again after seeing 4 Does and no Bucks. Saw a small 6pt and 4 more Does.

A deer with a 12 gauge to the shoulder sounds like a dead deer to me. Get some buddies and grid search that area is my advice. Sligh1 knows what he's talking about.

Slow down and relax bud. You sound like you are running around like a crazy man. Take it one step at a time and make a game plan. Exhaust all efforts looking for that buck. Check waterways and ditches and even try taking your dog for a walk in the area you think he may have gone. I wouldn't even try hunting other deer until you know for sure that you are not finding him.

Try setting up a bit off of the trails that the deer are using. It sounds by your story that you are right on top of them. Try moving back a bit so they don't walk right over you. Pretty neat encounters though :way:

Keep at it and good luck. You'll kill one. If you are frustrated after one day, you're in for a long hunting career. Patience is key, and learn to take the good with the bad and vice versa. Every experience can be learned from if you pay attention. Good luck buddy.

My parents pretty much moved on and said not to look for it  The one really big problem is it ran onto a place I can't hunt on. I know I can legally look for it if I have a blood trail but there's no blood trail thanks to the rain.

I understand! You don't necessarily need a blood trail to find a deer though. Watch for buzzards the next few days or like I said, check the waterways. Doubt the meat would be any good by now anyways, but would be cool to find your rack. Well good luck with the other deer and shoot straight.

I agree with the buzzard watch idea, also crows can be a giveaway too. Also, use your nose, this time of year you can often smell a dead deer 100 yards downwind of them after 3 or 4 days or so.

The deer in your avatar was one you wounded last year and never recovered until it was found dead after season. This sounds like deja vu. My advice is to practice your shooting and take shots you know you can make. You owe it to the animals.

You have great enthusiasm now work on great shooting and patience.

Good luck the rest of your seasons.

I've already done this, I'm great until 60 yards with a shotgun. I just aimmed to high because I though the slug would drop faster but I was up about 6ft.
