Congrats on your first deer YoungBuck! My first deer I remember like yesterday. It was a doe too. She sat under my tree what seemed like forever till she finally walked out about 25 yards a just stopped and looked at me. I didn't know if I should chance drawing with her staring at me but I thought it's now or never. She stood still and let me draw, And she stood a little longer so I could take a good clean shot. I waited 10 minutes tops and went to get my buddy. He couldn't believe it. I think he was more excited than me. We followed blood for about 70 yards and there she was. I could not believe my eyes. I didn't think she was real. I was so caught up in the moment my buddy had already started to field dress her. I'll never forget it. Hope you have many more great experiences with your grandpa. Listen to those ol'timers they know a little something about them whitetails. Anyway, good luck in the future.

Youngbuck, congratulations on that doe! It's great that you got to share the hunt with your grandpa also. I bet neither one of you will ever forget that hunt. Don't forget that big does are among the smartest deer in the woods.

I started hunting with a York recurve and Herter's arrows in the late 1960's. The first deer I arrowed was a doe fawn. I was so excited when the deer came close it sounded like I had a stethoscope in my ears and I could hardly breath. To me it was and always will be a tremendous trophy.

Thirty plus years later I still get that feeling, when I decide to draw on a buck or doe. I've just learned to control it...a little bit.

Congrat's again and good hunting!

My first deer was a ten point buck. Earlier that mornung I had my crosshairs set behind the shoulders of a smaller buck, but I couldn't pull the trigger. Still don't know why, but I'm not compaining. My dad and I decided to do some scouting on farm that you really have to get into to see much, so we were still hunting our way through. We were going through some weeds that were over our heads when my dad realized he had lost his phone. I glad we didn't stop to look for. A little bit further and we were inside a dense willow thicket, and there was alot of fresh buck sign. Let me emphasize FRESH. We got a little further along the outside before my dad stopped and I slipped up along side him. When I saw the deer, I decided to shoot, and when he whirled away my dad got his first look at the antlers. "It's a BUCK, Nate!". He ended up scoring 111, but he would have been in the high 120's, low 130's
had it not been for the velvet damage on one side.
What about you, Youngbuck? We got the basics, now what about the story behind it?

Congratulations younbuck. I agree with splitg. Treasure your hunting with your grandpa. shot my first buck a fat little 6 point hunting with my grandpa and now while my success is better as I hunt in different areas now that grandpop passed away, i wouldn't trade those memories for anything.

Igot my first deer this year with my bow. I am 14 and i started hunting wth a bow last year. I went out youth season and boy was that a mistake, it was just so short that i didn't get anything within range. So this year i got 2 bow tags 1doe and 1 any sex. On October 8th i shot a doe on video at 25 yards. I was so excited I didnt know what to think it was such a rush. Then on Nov. 23 i shot a 2 1/2 year old 7pt on video. was even more pumped up i could of kissed my cousin (cameraman). Everybody says how lucky i am to have the deer on video i know i sure am.

thanks to all who have responded to "youngbucks" post. he is quite the kid, i may be a little biased though, since he is my son. for all of you that have been a part of your son or daughters first deer harvest you know where i am coming from when i say that it is one of the most moving and proudest points of a dad's life. to add a little more to the story, my son was hunting right next to his grandpa at the time, i was about a hundred yards away at the time, and when i heard the shot, i knew it was my son who shot because of the distinctive sound of a muzzleloader, not sure who was happier, my dad,my son,or me but based on the tear that i seen well up in my dad's eye (this is the first time in my life that i have witnessed that), i am pretty sure that he had just reached a new milestone in his life. the shot was absolutely perfect, and the harvest was very quick. to say i am proud of him is an understatement, he also harvested his first turkey last fall, and his first antelope in october. And is getting great grades in school.

old buck, i don't think it is a coincidence that my son took the user name youngbuck, you are his idle, he talked to you for a bit down at the classic, spent an eternity in your booth, he is on your websight alot, and knows all of your prints like they were his own. he even took second place last year in the art contest at the classic 11 year old division, haven't heard the results of this years contest yet, but my fingers are crossed.

well guys sorry i rambled so long, but i just wanted to tell every one thanks for responding to his post and for the positive remarks.

My first shot at a deer was last bow season when I had a HUGE doe and her fawn from that year come in behind me and when they got to my shooting lane I let an arrow fly. With my luck of course it bounced of a small tree that I thought was out of the way, but it wasn't. When I looked at the arrow there was no blood but one of my blades was missing from the "STRONGEST" broadhead on the market, a THUNDERHEAD 85 Pro Series.

This past bow season (I was 13 and I'm turning 14 on the 27th) and I arrowed my first deer ever this year with my new PSE Durango at 13 yards. It was a good-sized button buck and when I reached him I was so excided and when my dad and I looked behind his back leg he had been gored by another buck! When we opened him up he was all infected inside so we left him for the Coyotes.

During the shotgun season my friend and I opened up on a young doe (8 shots) and missed her EVERY TIME!!!!!!! So as a father and friends are supposed to do they gave us a lot of grief about missing the deer 8 times. They next day we made up for it though! We had two 9 pointers come up to my friend and I and we shot them both. We were SO EXCIDED! When our dad's came out of the draw they knew we had something because we were all standing around looking at my friends deer. When my dad heard that we shot both of them them he really got excided that I harvested my first buck. After taking pictures of our deer our dad's made the comment that they thought we pulled another "Last Night" after hearing a ton of shots. He thought they were more deer running over the hill with a lot of lead following them. You can see my deer and my friend’s deer under the heading "Decatur County Bucks" and a close up of my deer under the heading "Christian's First Buck."

Congrats to "youngbuck" for harvesting his first deer! I know what these feelings are like. Congrats once again!

I got my first deer last year. A five piont buck, with my bow. I saw 4 different bucks that day, all going down the same path, to far a way to shoot. So later in the morning, I moved out of my stand, and sat about 25 yards off the trail on a log. About 10 minutes later, two bucks made there way down the trail. I didn't know the yardage, so i guessed. I shot one buck, and the other one stood there, not haveing a clue that any thing happen, he just kept on feeding. I waited for the buck to pass by to search for blood. I couldn't find any in a 50 yard radius. It puzzled me because I could of sworn I hit him. I looked for a bout 10 min, and decided to sit back on the log and wait for my friend to come over to me. Sitting back on the log, I knew something wasn't right. I asked my self, why did the one buck run off but not the other. I knew I had to of hit him. After my friend came over to my stand, i waved him down, and told him the story. We both began to look for blood. We came apon an old logging road. And we walked in opposited dirrections on the road. About 20 yards downt the road, I found the first drop of blood. I scanded the ground, and I could see the hole blood trail from where I was standing. We fallowed it for a bout 50 yards, and came apon my first deer. I shot the deer through, the lungs, and it nicked the heart. It took me 4 years todo it, but I finally did it. It wasn't a real big buck, but it was a trophy to me!!!!

my first deer truely was bambi. i shot it with a shotgun from less than 50 yards. at the time i was only 11 or 12. i thought it was pretty big when i first stood over it....then my dad threw it over his shoulder and carried it to the truck...i was still pretty proud though.

Congrats on your Iowa Whitetail!
