First Pin SET UP???

Crimson Arrows

Well-Known Member
I just purchased a new X force and REALLY like it. My question is how many of you sight their first pin in at 25 yards and then are able to be up or down a few inches up to about 30. My old bow was 255 fps and I had a 20/30/40/50/60 etc set up as I shoot out to 100 yards for form practice. I have been getting all KIND of input on sight in at 10, some say 20, some say 25 etc. What is best??????? Seems many deer I shoot are 23-27 yards. My set up is 305 fps, 26 1/2" draw, 360 grain arrow (that includes my 125 gr tip). Can a guy with this set up use one pin to 30 yards?? Never had the option before...now it seems I might! I know NOTHING is Flat but for hunting purposes, I think 3" up or down would be enough margin to still get the vitals. Any input would be greatly appreciated. THanks!!!!

I use a trophy ridge mantis v-drive which is a 1 pin sight that is also adjustable and has a pedulum feature. On my mathews i have it set it to be right on at approx. 25 yards. That means under a hunting situation on flat ground i am a little low(2-3") at 30 yards and a little high from 20 on in. When used from a treestand with the pendulum activated it allows even a bit longer range. My thinking is that from 30yds in i dont have to do anything but, aim and shoot.IF and i emphasize IF, i elect to shoot farther than 30 i will be using my rangefinder to confirm the yardage and then will turn the knob to the appropriate setting. this single pin setup has helped alot with my target panic problem and also opens up the sight picture on long range practice shots. To help improve my form and accuracy i regularly shoot at 70 yards which means you are going to have to be dialed in ,,,or else your gonna be losing some arrows.Considering i am cheap this means i am forced to concentrate as i dont want any of my arrows lost. This is what works for me however your preferences/equipment will dictate what is best for you.

My recommendation is to do some playing around. Sight a pin in dead on at 25 yards and then see how high it hits at 15 and 20 and how low at 30 and keep those measurements in your head. You can always make a little allowance when hunting just like pin gapping. Don't think that it will be perfectly flat out to 30 yards because no bow can shoot that flat (even rifles have bullet drop) But with a fast enough bow you can simplify life with a single pin set-up. I frequently shoot IBO Hunter class with only two pins - 25 & 40 and it works out great if your bow will fling them fast enough.

Thanks guys!!! Great advice. GUnrunr..what speed are you shooting? I actually am a little low at 30 and high at 13-19 (2.5" with my current set up with first pin at 25. Never had a pin set at 25 but may be my best option with this new set up. I always set at 20 before and HAD to have a 30 because I was 8-9" low with that pin. Maybe that will change. I also agree..NO BOW is flat, good point.

I've got three pins on my Q2: 25,40,50 works great for me. I'm shooting 288fps...
At ten yards my first pin is dead on (too short a distance to raise much I think). At 20 yards it's 1.5" high. At 35 yards it's about 5" low.
Like the others have told you, play around with it a while and see what works. Personally, I hate having a bunch of pins staring back at me when I'm hunting.

KSQ2.....thanks! I also have noticed at 10-12 its right about even and about 3" low at 30. Never had a 25/40 set up before but it seemed to work well yesterday. Seems that between 280-305 fps the "difference" is less than say 255-280 fps and slower. Thanks again! Any other advice from others I'd love to hear it.

One of my bows in the past was a Mathews Black Max. FAST... Oh man that thing screamed. I couldnt shoot it worth anything but it had speed.

Anyways, I had a 2pin fixed site. 25 yard and a 40. I never considered it a problem to shoot 15-30 with the first pin and after that I used the 40pin. Had a lot of putting the 10ring between the two pins. Probably not the best 3D idea but it was fine for hunting.
The person I sold it to has 3pins on it, 15 35 45. Some bows you just have a tough time having 20-25-30 pins.
