First season success

After constantly checking the weather throughout the days heading up to first season I was planning on getting a second season tag. Then Sunday evening the weather forecast changed and I made a last minute decision to get a first season tag and go hunting with my dad.

The first day ended with my dad shooting a shy tom after a morning of gobbles a long ways away.

The property we hunted on Monday doesn’t set up well for getting up and going after birds so I made a decision to go to a different property the next morning. We got up and made the even longer trip on Tuesday morning. With no scouting we decided to go to a place where we have had some luck in the past.

We were completely set up around 5:25am waiting for the first gobble. Based on the day before, we were expecting it around 5:55am but at 5:37am we were surprised with the first gobble of the morning. However, 15 minutes passed before the second gobble then they all started gobbling. They were fairly close but nothing was within 200 yards or so. One then lit up real close then a second one lit up right behind us… GAME ON!

They gobbled good one the roost and as it got light I could see one strutting on the limb not 100 yards from us so I turned 90 degrees to face his way. We were set up on the edge of a field where we thought they would head to. He flew down to the main ridge we were on and then shut up. The one behind us then flew down and started spitting and drumming close but we couldn’t see him. My dad then caught movement out of the corner of his eye and watched a turkey walk away from us in the field – likely the tom that was spitting and drumming. I then saw a tom strutting down in the valley next to a creek but he wasn’t moving much at all. After a little calling, the one on the ridge gobbled again. One minute later he gobbled closer. Another minute passed and he gobbled again… MUCH closer. I heard him spitting and drumming then he came up over the ridge right at us. One cluck, head up, and game over at 6:55am!
