I am looking to buy a shotgun from a local guy in iowa but he insists on me having a foid card before selling the gun, what do I have to do to get one? I have no criminal record of any kind but I just can't fid any info for getting one in iowa, is there a way I can go through a dealer or something?

no, I am from Iowa and he is also from Iowa but for some reason he thinks that I can get a foid card, so that he may keep in his records that he sold the gun, he also wants me to have one so he knows I am not a felon, I was reading about the iowa dnr gun sale and they require getting a iowa gun permit from your local sherrfi if buying any type of gun from the sale. I am thinking I might just get that so the guy can rest assured he did not just arm a felon.

Yeah, the guy must be thinking about a gun permit. Witch is only needed for handguns in Iowa. Your local sheriff can get you one really quick if you need one. We have a Fed firearms license for selling guns at our auctions. You really shouldn't need that permit in Iowa, but some dealers are really careful and particular. There just covering there butts. If he has a firearms license he should have a gun registery that shows his gun sales and a phone number to call to clear that you are not a felon. If he don't have those, he's probably trying to pull something over on you.

I'd just find a shop where they have an FFL and just buy it at retail. Avoid the confusion unless you just want to do the guy some business

I guess I agree, If he wants the business that bad he'll work with you. If not he don't need it.

First off as others have already said, Iowa doesn't have a FOID card. The easiest way to put it is that you can either get a permit to carry (concealed), or a permit to acquire pistols and revolvers-which is commonly referred to as a permit to purchase. A permit to acquire pistols and revolvers also enables you to purchase longguns in Iowa. This is kind of confusing because Iowa code 724, which is the chapter that deals with firearms sales and permits, doesn't state that you need a permit to purchase longguns, but says that you can purchase them if you have one. The permits to purchase are available from your local Sheriff's office and are $5. They usually take 3-5 days to get.(in Clinton Co)-there's a professional answer.
Personally I have bought two shotguns at Gander Mountain in Davenport and they asked to see a permit to purchase both times. I always thought that you needed a permit to purchase any firearm even though I couldn't find anything stating that in chapter 724.
My suggestion would be to get a permit to purchase. It's only $5 and it's good for a year so if a few months down the road you're at a store and see some gun you just gotta have your already covered.

The reason most shops ask if you have a handgun purchase permit when you go to buy a long gun is that if you do, it saves them having to run a NICS background check on you (or at least that's the way it works here). If you've got a hangun permit, it's no hassles, no background checks, no waiting. Just fill out the BATF form and you're out the door (even on handguns). I bought a handgun couple of weekends ago and it was a breeze since I already had the hangun permit.

My last 3 guns from scheels I didn't have a permit to purchase. 2 of the guns I took home the same day and the other one I had to come back for in a few days. They can run a backround check on you and it takes a couple minutes. But sometimes it won't clear you so the $5 is worthe it.
