Food plots- oats

Just planted oat for a food plot today in north east Iowa. Was that a bad idea? The reason why i did it was because we had to put in a new septic and they torn up bunch of land right by a heavily wooded area.

Might get too tall & nasty by the time season comes around. A buddy of mine planted some early too, claims that if he mows it, it does fine & keeps it tender - could try that? Another idea would be to re-do it around Sept 1st & put some other stuff with it like Dbltree has posted.

Played around with Oats a few time's over the many years of planting foodplots, Personally , I was never impressed with them ,!
