The later, the colder the better. Gun season has the deer so bumped around it's hard to say. During the late MZ and bonus season finding where they have been feeding in the hay fields is simple and productive. I plan to fill some doe tags with the MZ this way. Good luck.
Otherwise, I'd have to agree with old buck. Here's why. You have a few scant minutes to catch big bucks in field edges during shooting light most of the season. In the woods they will move prior to dark and longer in the morning. I like to find a few mature whiteoaks and hut between them and a staging are to a hay field in the afternoon or between them and a bedding area in the morning. Problem is they foten bed very close to the acorns.
Also, I've found that deer switch from beans to acrons about early-mid Oct.
They also hit them hard when thier favorite hay field has been cut, up until it sprouts out again. Acorns are the bomb! To bad oaks get logged so much.
I agree with the following 2. This being my first bow season in Iowa. I have realized 2 things. 1. Acorns are hard to find around my hunting areas. 2. The acorns I have found are completely ate up by now.
Most of my hunting has been in Oklahoma. Where we hunt acorns and very limited alfalfa.
Acorns are the best in my opinion but one thing you have to remember is that the deer tend to turn on and off to acorns. They will stay on white oak longer than red oaks but they will switch back and forth during the season. Just my thoughts.
