When shed hunting is it legal to take a bucks head that is mostly decaded out of the woods? I have never seen anything written about that. Thanks.

DNR policy was changed a couple of years ago that allows you to possess a skull with attached antlers that you found. Prior to that you could only possess sheds.

Doug do you have to contact your local DNR to get a tag or can it be picked up and taken home without a tag?

Thanks. I have one more question. I know a guy who works for the state highway dept and he said he finds dead deer on the highway all the time but he cant take the racks. Is that against the law or against the rules of the state? thank you

You do not have to contact your CO regarding the picking up of a found skull with attached antlers. There is no tag for those circumstances.

As far as picking up roadkilled deer. We (DNR) give out salvage tags in those instances, but the individual has to take possession of the whole deer, not just to take a nice set of antlers. Plus, if I found a set on my time off I could keep them, but anything found while working for the state (much like your DOT friend) we (COs) have to turn over to the state. We can't keep them.

Just got back from talking with Randy Mcpheran, I believe that's how you spell it. He tells me you have to contact your DNR and they will determine the circumstances of it's death and then issue you a tag to keep the rack. So there is some confusion about this issue. Doug can you clarify this for us, last thing I want is to pick something up I shouldn't.
