I'm sure thare are a lot of people on here that own property that they bought for the purpose of deer hunting and don't farm. If you just own recreational land and aren't a farmer how are you meeting the requirements to get a landowner tag?

Can you just plant a couple dozen apple tees and call it an orchard? I see on the DNR site a passage that states

"Issue: Qualifying Land
Land must be used for agricultural purposes and gain or enrolled in a set aside program to be eligible for Landowner-Tenant licenses. A landowner with two or more acres who is not receiving financial gain from the land is not eligible for Landowner-Tenant licenses. Having a garden, mowing the lawn or planting landscaping trees does not qualify."

Are all of you "receiving financial gain" from your land?

I would think the act of planting fruitbearing trees with the intention of selling fruit for profit after they matured would qualify although the financial gain would be anticipated in the future.

Just wondering, I'm looking for land but I'm not a farmer (although I did stay in a Holiday Inn once :D ).

There are no requirements to show financial gain for a landowners license. You are looking at the landowner tenant qualifications. For a second person to be eligable for a free tenants license; i believe you will have to show the tenant is actually making a profit or farming the land in some way.

Don't buy ground unless you make money off if it. It is smart, can be done and offer great hunting. A real investment!

All of my 70 acres is in forest reserve....I'm basically a tree farm. Over the past 20 years we have logged different sections (not clearcut). If I had any tillable, it would be in some program for sure.

Yep, you don't have to be a farmer to get landowner tags. If you own the land, you're set.
I have 2 apple orchards on my farms. I don't do anything with fruit tree reservations or anything to get any gov benefits for having.
You're set and it sounds like the above guys also reinforce that point. (I'm selling a 146 acre piece that's almost all timber but room for some food plots- a guy buying will get land owner tags).
