For those that use climbers

For those of you guys that use climbers, how many of you have ever had the bottom platform fall out from underneath you while you are climbing up or down your tree. I ask, because this almost happened to me last night. I was climbing down from about 20 feet, when my right boot slipped out of the foot stap. Luckily, my left foot stayed in. I don't know what I would have done besides just dangle there about 20' up.

Guilty!!

I did it the second time I ever used it and the bottom went all the way down. There I hung with half my stand on the ground! I pushed off and landed on the ground only to realize the the top have was still up there. I then got to go get steps to climb up and get the top down!!! I was somewhat unhappy!!

Guess that'll little pain in the butt rope that connected them together I cut had a purpose after all! I still don't have them connected together, but I have learned to take my time now! It is not a fun or recommend situation!

I've got a rope connected to the climbing/seat part to the base for those rare instances.

If it does happen, you just bear hug the tree and head down. Pretty fun times, did it as a youngster with a one piece climber that you had to hug the tree to climb.

I hear ya Andy. I took that rope off also. It was a pain in the butt, but now I'm thinking it may have been there for a very good reason!

how is the little rope getting in the way? i have an API climber that has the top and bottom attached by a rope and it's never been in the way. it actually helps me get my feet under the staps as i can pull them up with the rope and just slip in.

The one that was on my summit, was tied directly in the center of the bottom platform, and I was always getting my feet tangled in it. I know I could have just retied it in a different possition, but it was just easier to take it off and leave it off. I think I may tie it back on now.

So lets get this straight Lance. You remove the safty rope from your climber, and your asking other people on this site to admit to doing the same dumb thing you did! /forum/images/%%GRAEMLIN_URL%%/grin.gif By the way your PM does not work. When i send you a PM it say's it's going to nobody? /forum/images/%%GRAEMLIN_URL%%/blush.gif Try sending me one.

180class has his account set so as not to receive private messages. I found that out during turkey season this spring.

I've never even came close to having my platform slip off my feet. My sections are not connected.

If I ever lost my platform, I'd be bear-huggin the tree and going down to get, strap it back on, and bear hug on back up to get my top section.

I have an "adjust-on the fly" belt type climber. It's awesome...especially for the typical tree that really tapers from bottom to top. I can get half way up and re-cinch my platform so that it will be level when I get to my desired height...re-cinching should also keep the platform from falling.

I've had my climber for 5 or 6 years. It's a Grizzly Climber Kodiak...or something like that. By far my favorite stand.

Same on my Gorilla, I use it to pull up on the foot straps, never been a problem for me. I haven't had the bottom fall out while climbing but this past week I got up in the tree in the morning. After day break I decided to stand up for a while. I stood as far back on the stand as I could so I was against the tree. Well the tree wasnt' exactly straight and the bark was wet and the base of the stand settled in about 6". Kinda scared me at first but just readjusted the stand and was good to go. I don't know how you guys use hand climbers, I can't imagine going real high climbing with those?

When I was in college at Iowa I went and bought a real cheap, I believe $80, climber. I made the purchase right before the rut and thought it would be a good idea to climb up a tree and study/read while I was up there. The first day I did this on an all day sit it started to rain around 11 am. I had a treestand umbrella attached and decided to just sit tight and finish reading a few chapters. After about 2 hours of rain and not seeing anything I decided to stand up and strech out. As soon as I stood up the bottom of my climber lost its grip from the tree and if not for a quick reaction of the arms and a good grip by the top half of my climber I would have been on my way down with it. Unfortunaly I didnt manage to catch myself while holding onto my bow because it made the 20 foot drop to the ground. I actually had a rope attached from my base to my seat but when it was fully extended it was still about 3 feet below my feet as I was dangling. Anyways, once I regained composure and managed to inch down to the base I climbed down, changed my underwear....ha ha not really but I needed too. Well needless to say if any of you ever happen upon a real cheap looking climber at the base of a hickory tree in the Iowa City area you'll know that is the place that ol'droptine37 decided climbers weren't for him!

I have a Lone Wolf Sit and Climb.

I have had the bottom fall twice in three years. Usually happens coming down in wet conditions.

Its not a huge deal because I always have the stablizer straps connected and they are on the side of the stand so they are not in your way when you are climbing.

I have a Summit Goliath and have never had it slip away from me....then again, I keep the little rope tied between the upper and lower parts.

Back in my younger days, when I used a hug n climb climber, I rode the platform from 20' up to the base of the tree on a white oak. Dad was watching and laughing. I think I was 13. Pretty much filled my eyes with shredded bark and scared the crap out of me....Then I had to climb all the way back up....and then I screwed up on a great 8pt. Not a good night, but I'll never forget it.

I do? Sorry guys. Didn't mean to. I was wondering why all was quiet for a while. Yes Derek, what you described is exactly what I did. Pretty dumb huh?

Hey Muddy, how do I fix my account so I can receive PMs again? I know I didn't check anything in the past. I think this somehow got messed up during the upgrades. HELP!
