I got home from work let trace my four year old gsp outside and he comes running back past me into the house. I thought he just was in a hurry, walking in I smell that he met a skunk. He was rubbing his face on the floor and pawing at it. Took him straight into the shower and I washed him four times, still stunk. Then i poured two big bottles of tomato juice over him and rubbed in really good. Kinda looked funny made him turn a nice pink color anyway, rinsed that off then washed him again. I figured he was clean dried him off took him up stairs and nope still stinks bad. Plus my house stinks he ran all over fighting the smell I assume until I got to him. So he's in the garage for the night and all my windows are open. Any help???

There was a mythbusters on that but I forget what worked.

I think over time your nose will shut off to that smell and you won't smell it but everyone you come incontact will smell it on you :)

My shorthairs regularly meet skunks while bird hunting...especially this latest stubborn little female

Anyway, try this combination. Mix 2 parts water with 1 part hydrogen peroxide. Add in a couple of spoonfuls of baking soda and a few drops of Dawn dishwashing soap. Wash the dog thoroughly with this mixture and rinse. May need to repeat a second time, but after that the smell should be eliminated, or at least dramatically reduced. Good luck :way:

My dog got sprayed a few weeks ago and we got this combo off the net...I washed him 3 times but he still has a slight odor. Good luck

Not dog specific, but years ago my brother tried skinning two skunks he had trapped. Let's just say that he FAILED! :D Someone advised my mother to purposely burn sugar in a saucepan and then walk around the house with the smoldering pan of burnt sugar. Well the sugar smell was quite the knockout by itself, but it did mask the skunk smell as I recall.

Years later a friend of mine who was a police detective told me that burning sugar was an old technique in police work when they were investigating a crime scene where the victim(s) had, well, umm, been there awhile.

i have a great recipe, but its in my truck back at school.. google peroxide skunk wash, hopefully thatll do it.. I'll post mine when i get back

this mixture works fairly well....i've used it a couple of times. unfortuneatley though, there will be a hint of skunk smell on your dog for awhile but this recipe will make it tolerable to be near him.

Remedy Skunk Tonic

For use to remove skunk odor from humans, clothing, and pets.

Mix together:
1 quart of hydrogen peroxide
¼ cup baking soda
1 teaspoon liquid laundry soap or dish washing detergent

The first two ingredients form alkaline peroxide that chemically changes the skunk essence into sulfonic acid, an odorless chemical. The soap breaks down the oily skunk smell and makes it more susceptible to the other chemicals.

Chemicals in this formula are harmless, but try this solution at your own risk. To be safe, keep the formula away from the eyes, nose, and mouth of people and pets.

DO NOT store this mixture or put it in a closed container. When kept in a warm place, the mixture may expand and burst the container.
