Genesis bows

My son is getting one for his birthday in a few weeks. I'm wanting some advise as far as accessories go. I figure a 1 or 2 pin sight and a WB. What has worked for you guys with the Genesis?

Also a release that will fit an average sized 9 year old?

Is this his first bow? If it is I would go sightless initially....teaches them to aim w/o that confusion of another piece of equipment. My son (6) has now moved up to a Mini Genesis and still does not have a sight on it. He is also still pulling fingers. My daughter (11) has been shooting a release for a few years. I think both TruBall and TrueFire make a junior model that will fit your son for a long time. It's alot of fun to watch them shoot.

I bought the Mini Genesis for my 2 older daughters ( 6 & 8 years old )... they really enjoy shooting it but do have some problems with the arrow jumping off the shelf if they pinch the string too tight with their fingers. I think a whisker biscuit would be a great choice. I bought a Trufire junior size release for them to try... it is a great quality release with lots of adjustment. It can be set up for a very light trigger or can also be set up to be used by squeezing the trigger and then releasing it to let the string go..... also keep in mind the Genesis does not letoff... poundage increases like a recurve when drawn... so I would make sure he can handle the Genesis vs. Mini Genesis.

My only problem occurred when my oldest daughter accidently triggered the release before she was ready and shot the basement wall this winter

did not hurt anything (concrete wall) but since then she will not use the release because she is afraid of it

It's not his first bow, but I would call it his first "real" bow. He has been shooting a cheap kids recurve for 2 years w/o sights or release and has done well. Everytime for the last year that we have been in Cabela's he has wanted to try the Genesis, but couldn't get it pulled back. Last month we were in there and we tried again and he seemed to get it back effortlessly and got to shoot about 20 arrows at the range and did great. I didn't want to get the mini because I knew he would quickly outgrow it, so he just kept shooting the cheapy until now. Maybe I'll hold off on the sight and release for a while and just put a biscuit on it. It's fun seeing him interested in archery even though he doesn't have a desire yet to be a hunter. Hopefully that will come along in the future. I'm not pressuring him at all in that direction. Thanks for the tips.

You might want to try a Parker Buckshot. They have adjustable draws and you can buy different limbs to adjust as he grows. I bought one for my 11 year old last year and he loves it. He is capable now of shooting 45 pounds and can't wait until bow season. It has a let off and you can get it set up with a whisker biscuit or two pronge rest, sights and quiver for around $300 or less.

Thanks Kevin. I looked at the Parker tonight at Bass Pro and my son got to shoot it a few times. Almost bought it. I ended up buying the new Diamond Cutter. Its a good looking bow and he handled it a little better than he did the Parker. Stuck a WB and a cheap 3 pin sight on it and will be getting it dialed in tomorrow. My son was grinning ear to ear when we were walking out of the store tonight, which in turn caused me to be grinning as well. It's good to see him excited about something other than his video games. He asked if he could still get a Nintendo DS for his birthday also(which is on July 4th by the way). I told him that as much as I spent tonight on his bow, he'd be lucky if he got anything for Christmas from me.

I don't know anything about the Diamond but if it is like the parker you can't go wrong. My son loves his parker and has became a very good shot with it. He is deadly accurate up to 25 yards with his bow. I liked his parker so well I went and got one last weekend. Which is a big step up for me since my last bow was a jennings I got back in 1988. I have killed a lot of deer with it but once I shot this bow, I couldn't believe how fast it was. Good luck and come on Dad the DS is only $130!
