Gobbler #2 yesterday

Buckhunter

New Member
Hey everyone,
Just thought I would tell you guy's about my morning.I had set up on a monster feild and thought about setting up my decoy but I have had such bad luck with them that I did not set it up,Anyway about 5:40am I heard my first gobble and he was close!I waited for about 5 minute's and finally got my trusty slate out and made one real quiet serios of roost call's and they he hammeed back HARD!I put my call down and was setting there wishing that I had set up my hen in the field in front of me cause I had a feeling that they were going to come out into it but it was to late for that.I waited about another 8 or 10 minute's and then I heard what I thought was a gobbler going into strut,I figured out later that it was one of them flying accross the creek.I finally picked up my slate and made another series of call's and he gobbled hard and they were on me!!!
I set my slate down got my gun up and within about 30 second's they come walking over the hill. There were 2 of them and they were HUGE!I already had my mossberg up and watched them walk within 25 yard's or so,I finally decided to take the lead gobbler and took what I thought was the perfect shot when he lifted his head up.He jumped straght up in the air about 10 feet at the shot and hit the groung flopping,I jumped up to run out to him and he looked at me and jumped up and took off running,I shot him again and he went up in the air again. He took off running again and by this time we are both running for all we are worth. He ran into the timber were they had came out at and I ran to were he had went in at and ran directly into a barb wire fence hard.By the time I got loose and started looking for him he was out of site.I spent the next hour looking for him and kicking myself for blowing such an easy shot.I still do not know how he could have taken a 3 1/2" 5 and still manage to run off?
Well I finally decided that he was gone

I was totally frustraited at this point thinking about everything that had gone wrong.
I finally gathered my thought's and decided to go ahead and keep on hunting.Everything had gotten queit by then and I thought about just going home but decided I would just start glassing fields in the hope I could find another one.
I had went about 100 yd's when I started kicking up bird's right and left.I was really begining to believe that it was not meant to be on this day

I finally decided that if I had any chance's left it would be just to get set up on a field and wait for the bird's to come to me.I went up the first hill I could find and as soon as I got to the top I started seeing hen's out in the field.I stood stone still for about 15 minute's wondering what my next move would be.Finally 3 of the 4 hen's moved off to my left with the other one staying out a little to my right.I watched her until she finally went out of sight and decided that I would get set up on the field and just sit tight for a couple hour's.I crossed a fence and just started looking for a place to sit down and I seen the hen that I thought was gone taking to the air!And just to make matter's worse there was a gobbler with her that I never seen running down the fence row like there was no tamorrow

I just could not believe how bad thing's were going.I finally started thinking about the other 3 hen's and were they had went. There was a slight rise in the pasture I was in and so I started walking toward were the hen's had went. When I got to were I could just start seeing over the top I could not believe what I was seeing! There were 2 full fan's moving around about 60 yd's in front of me.I still cannot believe those bird's did not see or hear something when I got busted by the other hen.
I knew that I would not take that long of a shot so I got behind a huge old oak tree and thought about my next move.I finally decided that I would take my vest and binoc's off and crawl as close as I could and see what would happen.I had already pretty much hit rock bottom on my ability's as a turkey hunter so I was thinking wwhat have I got to loose?Anyway i started my stalk and the whole time I can just see the top's of there fan's.I got to within what I thought was as close as I could get(about 35 yd's) and I could see that one of them went out of stut.I thought I had been had again!I decided to take the gobbler out of strut and I rose up on my knee's and made sure I was right on him and fired. He went down and the rest of them went everywhere in short order.I ran to him ready with a second round in the chamber. He was down for the count.
The first thing that went through my head was to thank god for the fortune that I had on this day,I did not deserve this opprotunity but was very thankful for it.
I learned some thing's on this hunt that will alway's stay with me.
#1.Never get to confident no matter how easy the shot seems, and alway's be prepaird for a follow up shot even if you think it's over.
#2No matter how bad thing's are going,NEVER GIVE UP.Thing's could not have gone any worse for me and yet I still managed to harvest one of the most awsome creature's on God's green earth.
Sorry about the long story everyone but it was such a weird morning that I thought you might like to here my story and maybe some of you could relate to what I went through and maybe some could see that it aint over until you give up.
Anyway here's the picture of a gobbler that I earned every bit of.I learned alot from this hunt and I will never forget that day,it will go to the grave with me.Good luck to everyone that are still out there and when thing's are going bad just think about me,and hopefully that will keep ya going!
Oh,almost forgot.He only weighed 17#'s,he had a 10" beard and 1" spur's.
