Gobbler-Hen Question...

I was curious as to when in the season the gobblers are lonesome and lookin for hens to pair up with? I went last year.. and i didnt get one.. i called in 2 to about 45 yds.. but then they lost interest and walked on and never gave me a shot! How do you know when to call and when not to call? just curious and some help would be awesome! Thanx Fellas!

there is no set time period when Gobblers won't be looking for hens to pair up with during the mating season. there are factors that will keep them from running in to a call though. Being grouped up with hens, calling too loudly or from a location they don't feel comfortable being are just a couple factors that can make or break having a Gobbler come to your call. Pay close attention to the location of your setup being careful not to have some kind of barrier between you and him. When calling, just try to feel the Bird out. If he continues gobbling but doesn't seem like he his coming you may need to try a new setup being careful not to spook him and if he sounds like he is coming to your calls try toning down the volume or don't continue to call. Hope this helps. Good Luck

during the mating season if u do some lookn in to it 65% of turkeys that are killed is between 10 and 2 o'clock when they hang out in there strut zones do some scouting to find these honey holes and you will be sucessfull
good luck!!!

45 yrds with a gun that is close enough, with a bow obviously a different story.

Last year this is how I killed both of my birds, hunted the fly down spots in the morning and then they hung up and killed them in their "valley".

We took 4 birds out of the "valley" last year and I have went out already and there was 30-40 birds in the valley and 4 gobblers were already starting to strut.

If you have time do a lot of scouting now and if you are having trouble try going in just at dusk and doing some Owl calls and find them in the roost, great way to find out where to set up for the next morning.

Good luck.

Scouting now in my area would be pointless because they are still in their winter flock. There is a group of over 100 birds flocked about a half mile from where I hunt and they won't disperse for a few more weeks, or at least that has been my experience in the past. I almost never see a turkey on my hunting ground in the winter. But come April 1st, they're everywhere.

this is true, however, later in the season the hens will be leaving the gobblers sooner in the day, so the later the date, the more lonly birds there will be
BUT if you find one in the early season.....he is very very vulnerable
and 45 yards is a poke, but i may have thrown some lead....
