Looking out my back window now. That small foodplot down the lane is about 120 yards.
Important, that lane faces due N.E.
Have watched 1000s of deer go through it over the years. ( yes, most are the same deer)
Come October through spring time, I heat with wood. Any variation of a SW wind (which is common here) blows right up that lane.
I keep my windows open most all summer long and keep a couple cracked even during _ 20*
Point is, deer are SUPER USED to smelling me all year long.
That bird feeder is about 30 feet from my window and all year long but mostly in the dead of winter, deer visit it it almost daily to pick off the ground the birds spill.
I've had many times the radio cranked, chicken frying, telephone ringing, and the local deer (does)will often stay there and feed. If I stay calm and don't make a quick movement or a strange noise, they usually stay somewhat at peace even with the wind blowing right at them.
I typically don't even hunt until late October. Once it's go time, I try and keep that burn barrel full of punky wood and smoldering. Often for a month of more. My woods are bombarded with smoke all the time no matter which way the wind is blowing.
The blue shed is where I hang my clothes. Everything included socks n underwear.
My bow, release, fanny pack, boots... everything I bring with me to hunt. Rattling anters, yep.
I build a smudge fire inside and close it up so every fiber of everything thing I hunt with has been 100% washed in smoke.
I have no fancy clothes, patterns, high dollar stuff.
Have proved over the past 45 years it un needed. ( unless inclement weather) which I seldom do anymore.
Anywhoo, that foodplot down the lane, (to the NE) I have ZERO apprehension sitting over with a SW wind even though it's almost certain deer are gonna pass downwind of me at close range.
And no, thermals are basically a non issue here. Super flat ground and most of my stands are bout 12'.
I shower up with plain Ivory unscented soap before the hunt, step in wood ash ashes with my boots and coat them good, and go hunt.
I breath out of my nose when deer are close n downwind.
Nope, never shot a 200" buck..., rare thing round here, but a 200" 6 year old buck ain't one bit
smarter then a 6 year old 140".
Super amount of fulfilments having the deer walk by over n over year in/ out and never get busted.
I realize this topic is a controversial one and will forever be discussed/ argued I'm just gonna say...
If you have a smaller property, try this.
It works wonders .
