Got mu aging back.

I posted about what a mature deer was a while back. I finally got my aging results from the DNR, of a tooth I had sent in back in the winter. I am not that great at aging deer or scoring points. Some friends on here scored the rack at 145 ish. The deer turned out to be a 5 1/2 yr old. I suppose at that age his rack could have been bigger. They said the tooth showed up well for scoring. I am happy that it was a fully "mature", animal. No matter what the score of the points.

Do you have any trail camera pics of him before you shot him? It would be interesting to see some pics of him now that you know his age.

No pics,,but I knew when I saw him coming and when I tried to move him, that he was a big one. Just shows that 5 1/2 yrs doesn't always mean a monster rack.

Just goes to show that people can't guess accurately on age of a buck.
I don't think I have ever posted a guess on the age of a buck on this site from a pic.
I have a buck hanging on my wall that the guy at the locker said would have weighed 300# live.It was mounted on a mule deer form because there wasn't a big enough whitetail for made to fit the cape.It has a 32'' neck.I didn't have a tooth aged to be sure how old it was.I wish I had.But the rack scores 119.

There are many mature (5.5+) deer out there that don't score more than 150. It takes the right mix of genetics and age for a deer to reach a higher score, and most don't have the right genetics to do that.

Good to know. I didn't know that was the case. Most think older,,Bigger,,and Bigger...Bigger. Not always so,,I guess.

Very good post. This is why I sometimes laugh to myself when people post "give him one or 2 more years" on a photo of a smaller (but still nice), obviously mature buck.
