Grain Dryers

Wapsi Tree Rat

Well-Known Member
So, 15 years ago I bought a great piece of land in Eastern Ia in the Wapsi River Valley. I built a new home and and a few tree stands all within 300 yds of the front door. Life and hunting were great until 6 years ago a when grain dryer went up a mile north of me. One of the best parts of hunting in hearing the crunch of leaves approaching before you've even seen the deer. It gets my heart pounding every time, but now I have trouble hearing it over the roar of the dryer. This year another dryer went up about a 1/2 mile south and I can't hear a thing! Yesterday morning a fat boy slipped behind me, likely in shooting range, but I didn't notice him till he was 50 yds out and moving away. The leaves were so dry I should've heard him. I wanted to get down and rub my head on the base of a tree.

I get it, the farmer has a job to do that feeds his family while I'm out playing in the woods. Is my life so bad? or do I have a right to use and enjoy my land as stated in Iowa law? I'm not about to go tell a farmer to let his crop sit and rot till I get a deer. Anyone else dealt with this?

We have a dryer less than a mile from us and I hunt occasionally in my back yard and it doesn't seem to cover any natural sounds. I can still hear leaves drop or chipmonks bounce around. I belive they have some noise contained, have the motor/fans enclosed partially. Really it just sounds like a combine running over the hill...24/7 :) I'm sure they don't like the sound either but it is what it is. Definitely cannot hear it inside the house

Most likely he is running an axial fan (screamer). He could go with a centrifugal fan which is much more quiet. Centrifugal fans are generally a little more expensive. You could see if he would change the fan, or you offer to help with the cost of switching, if it is that important to you, he might listen.

I know nothing about these dryers, but new one to my south appears to be mounted on a platform with no walls surrounding the heating unit and it is line of sight to my house and I can hear it inside the house. Not normal?

I like that idea...What would be approx cost difference? Any idea?

You are going to need a new fan transition and a new fan. Depending on the millwright company they may take the fan in on trade and you pay the difference plus labor, electrician to re hook up. If I were to guess 2,000-3,000 rough estimate.

I have the same problem on one of my stands I just hung ... perfect pinch point funnel for the deer to cross the road signs everywhere awesome trails but didn't notice the bin fan when I hung it , now that it's running full boar 3-400 yards away seems like the deer just skate around me. Anyone else think they effect movement ?

We have a property that was on a closed road..After we bought the property, they reopened the road, and reopened the quarry that sits north of the property. From about 5:30 am to 6 pm semis and excavators all day long roaring away. Deer dont seem to mind, just gotta pay closer attention..
