So anyhow I thought I would throw a quick write up together about my bird on tuesday! It was a short and sweet hunt. Me and kris left monday night and headed for his farm. We got everything together before we went to bed and I attempted to study for the test I had the next morning.
The next morning we were in the timber by 4:15 and getting set up. By 5 oclock we figured we were screwed as we could see two hens roosted not 80 yards away directly across the river. I was bummed to say the least because I thought we were in trouble. So about 5:15 they hadnt gobbled (which was way to early anyhow) but I let out some soft tree yelps and did a little dirty bedroom talk. The toms exploded directly in front of us and directly behind us. So I shut up I waited a bit and did some more soft calling and after about the second series one let loose on the ground behind us!! I did a little more calling and got nocked up and threw the call on the ground. The bird continued in to about 5 yards and than he got a little sheepish. He started to back out and I made an EXTREMELY DIFFICULT 8 yard shot !
Now is were our hunt really begins. I let out a string of profanity as I see the bird tumble down the bank into the swift current. I bust out of the blind with birds exploding everywhere!! And run down the bank while wags pursues with the camera. I rip off my clothes and start to run towards the river. I get about two steps into the water and disappear. It was deep and with an air temp of about 25 degrees it was freezing. I caught up to it and about 60 yards down river I was out! I proceeded to throw my bid down and do an interview!! It was sweet!!
