Well guys it was a great weekend. Got to hunt with my two best friends on my buddies new farm and tagged out with the bow on two good birds on Saturday. My buddy Scott also filled his 2nd season gun tag. As most of you know the weather was horrible Saturday. High wind, rainy and COLD. My buddy who owns the land hunted one field and he had me and my buddy Scott (The Roosta) set up on a nice little clover plot overlooking a CRP field and a cut CRP field that he planted in switchgrass.
We really didn't expect too much as far as gobbling and wasn't really sure how the birds would react in the weather. We heard around 4 birds sounding off in the distance in the morning. Right off the bat bird #1 came running through the CRP and strutted and gobbled down in the cut CRP. All the sudden a hen joined him. He kept strutting and getting a little closer but he was interested in the hen. All the sudden out of the blue the hen took flight up and across the timber. The game was on!!!
The boss locked down into the mean walk and was coming at a fast pace. He came right through the tall CRP and into the clover plot about 48 yards away. He immediately went into half strut and did the mean walk right into 6 yards where he went into full strut and was chest bumping my DSD Jake. I pulled back and focused on his head with the Magnus bullhead. This was my first year trying them. He turned head on and I shot. POOF, feathers everywhere. I missed so I thought!! I told my buddy Scott to get the gun and dump him. He held off on shooting since the bird was acting FUNNY. All the sudden he fell over. He got back up walked a few steps and fell over again. He did this a few times until he finally was down for good. I sliced him wide open across the waddles. Bird #1 down!! The time was 6:49AM.
Not a bad bird at all. 22# 7/8 inch spurs and 9.5inch beard. We sat in excitement and about 45 minutes later we heard a gobble down along the cut CRP. After about 10 minutes we finally seen bird #2. He locked into the decoys and entered the clover plot. At 33 yards my buddy Scott layed him out with the 12 guage. Bird #2 down. 7:40am. His was a good bird too. 9 inch beard, 21# and 3/4 inch spurs. My other buddy then joined us in the blind but had no luck.
Here are the first two birds of the day.
That evening my one buddy sat down in the timber a long a logging road and Scott and I went back to the clover plot. At 3:15pm 6 hens came out in the cut CRP with a jake. They seen the decoys and here they came. They got down into this depression and to our surprise two bosses joined them and were leading the pack. As they entered the clover plot, the game was on. Both birds went into the mean walk and were fast approaching the DSD Jake. Man I love that thing! So now here I am with two birds in full strut on each side of my jake at 6yds chest bumping my jake. The one bird was HUGE the other was a good bird too. I pulled back and settled on the big ones head. Just as I was pulling the trigger, the other bird jumped on top of the jake and was OWNING it! Unfortunately I was already shooting and completely missed the big boy because he jumped straight back when the other bird jumped on the jake. :thrwrck:
He ran off about 15 yards but the other bird sat there doing the deed with the jake and facing me. I then grabbed an arrow with a Rocket hammerhead on it. I drew back and settled just above the beard. Just as I was about to shoot he hopped off and ran about 5 yards back to his buddy then turned around and was quartering to me. I settled the pin and shot. Feathers flew and the bird flipped upside down. He jumped back off and started walking away. After about 10 steps he went down for good. Bird #3 down for the day and now I am tagged out. I have never got both my birds with a bow, especially in the same day!!.
Bird #3 was good as well. 23# 9 inch beard and 7/8 inch spurs.
Here he is on the right and with my other bird.
Group shot.
We hunted this morning with no luck. Had a big boss come into the field but wouldn't commit. I would like to say THANKS to my buddy for letting me hunt! I had a blast and we will get you a bird yet!! :way:
