CRESTON - <ST1<st1laceName w:st="on">Green</st1laceName> <st1laceType w:st="on">Valley</st1laceType> <st1laceType w:st="on">State Park</st1laceType> will be closed to the general public November 20 and 21, to allow the state park to conduct its annual special deer herd population management hunt. This will be the seventh year for the hunt.

The Iowa DNR allows 30 hunters using only muzzleloaders to harvest up to 60 antlerless deer. The hunters have already registered and will receive two antlerless tags each, redeemable only during the special hunt at the designated areas and specified dates.

To ensure a safe event, the park will be closed to the general public and additional DNR staff will be on hand to patrol the park boundaries during the two day hunt. <ST1<st1laceName w:st="on">Green</st1laceName> <st1laceType w:st="on">Valley </st1laceType>will re-open to the public on November 22.

"The muzzleloader only hunt in the fall helps keep the deer population in the park under control. We have had six successful hunts and we are hoping this year's hunt will be just as good," said Park Ranger Alan Carr.
"All of the hunters have attended a special safety meeting for this hunt and we are expecting the hunt to go just as well as in the past. We hope to harvest as close to 60 female deer as we can and do it in a safe and efficient manner.

"This has shown to be a great management tool for state parks," he said.
"The hunt will probably remain an annual event because research shows that if you stop these hunts completely the deer population can increase rather quickly."
