Guided elk hunt

I'm looking at a once-in-a-lifetime fully guided elk hunt for fall 2011. Anybody got any outfitter recommendations?

Where are you looking? I know of 2 outfitters in Montana I can recommend, but I'm pretty sure there is a 4 year wait for a tag for the unit(s) they guide in. The 4 year wait doesn't do you any good, but they might be able to recommend some of their competition in other units in MT.

Guessing that would cost about a lifes savings?

Well if your guessing than why would you post this? I dont understand the negative comment

Bronc,

Depending on what you want to spend and what weapon you are choosing to use (bow, gun), you should be able to find a great hunt for between 2k-15k. NM has some phenomenal hunting, but it is higher end, the land owner tag and the use of an outfitter will usually run between 6-12k(which isn't a life savings). There are some good outfitter hunts in Colorado and Wyoming that are more affordable. My Bro did a pack in trip over by Yellowstone last year for 3500$ but it was rifle and was during the migration down to the park, as well as a 22 mile horseback ride through the pass to get to camp. I can find out the name of the outfitter if you would like. Montana has some great hunting north of Billings and you shouldn't have a problem finding an outfitter there. I guess my only good advice is to figure out what time of year you want to go, what kind of hunt you want to do (pack in, lodge, horseback), what area you would like, how much you want to spend, and what you consider a trophy? And then find an outfitter in the state of your choice, and get both successful and non successful references to call. If it truly is once in a lifetime for you, then do what you want regardless of price and location. I don't think you will regret your choice. Good luck and I hope you kill a giant. :way:

Lighten up dedgeez, wasn't really meant as negative. Guess you have to get my sense of humor. Though you brought it up, I do shake my head at the $$$ some of these hunts go for.

Unless you go with a landowner tag, Wyoming will be out for 2011, lic. application period was over January 31. Wyoming Wildlife Adventures wyohunts.com may be able to set you up. Contact them and see. Good luck

Archery or Rifle?
Colorado is buy over the counter, and I think only certain areas required you to do preference points there. I have some info at home from the classic that I picked up as I am planning to go on an archery hunt in 2013. I will look over some of the info and PM you websites and numbers. I also watched a Colorado archery hunt on TV that looked pretty exciting and I have the name of that outfitter written down at home and will give you that also.

Go to Huntingfool.com and they have an extensive listing state by state with LO tag options if you are looking into that as well. They have sponsored outfitters as well. It does cost $100 to join the service but worth it in my opinion

There is a guy on Bowsite that offers horseback rides into the public san juan mountains near Durango,CO through his shortcut of private ground. He takes you to a spike camp and gets you back in. Horses get your meat back out. Semi guided I would call it, and much cheaper price then having someone with you all of the time.

Well, silly me! New Mexico app deadline hasn't passed yet. Going to try that route again. If that doesn't pan out, maybe an OTC in CO.

I should have picked up on that one, too. I can make some quick inquiries to a couple of friends that hunt NM almost every year if you want ideas on areas with better than average chances of getting drawn or areas with good landowner tags. I've also got a good buddy in CO I can put you in touch with for OTC tag units.
