I have been hunting all week and have had great hunts every morning, just haven't been able to get it done. On Thursday morning when I was out I thought I made a great shot on a nice gobbler at 12 yards, searched for him for 3 hours and couldn't find him. Sick to my stomach, I decided I was going to buy some guillotines and start having clean kills or clean misses from now on.
I had to buy some new arrows and keep them at their stock 32 inch length so the broadhead wouldn't contact the riser, and then got some of the 4 inch 125 grain guillotines. I fletched up the arrows with 5 inch feathers with a severe helical. Got my bow sighted in real quick with my new setup and I was ready for the next day.
Friday morning it was raining so I slept in. My buddy called me and said he wanted to go hunting so I told him I'd pick him up at 2:00 for an afternoon hunt. We headed out to one of my spots that historically has been a great spot for the birds in the evenings.
We quickly got the blind setup and I put out B-Mobile and 2 hens 10 yards from the blind. We were setup by 2:45. After about 10 minutes I started to do some soft calls. It was extremely windy which made it hard to hear but I thought I heard a faint gobble in the distance. 10 minutes later I called again and 2 gobbled right back right behind the blind. I quit calling, got my bow ready and my buddy got his gun up. A couple of minutes later 3 gobblers came running out into the picked cornfield in a race to get to the setup. They all fanned out and started strutting around the decoys, I drew my bow back, placed my first pin on one of the gobbler's heads and squeezed off. All I saw was him drop, then my buddy capped another one with the gun. After some hooting and hollering we got out of the blind to admire our double. Easily the coolest turkey hunt I've ever been on. My bird's head was only being held on by a tiny piece of skin, but his windpipe was completed severed. Looks like I'll be sticking with guillotines for a long time. My bird weighed in at 21.4 lbs, 3/4" spurs, and a 10 inch beard. Kyler's bird was 18 pounds even, 7/8" spurs, and a 10 inch beard. We were in the truck heading home at 3:30. Now I just have to wait for 4th season to get here.
