NEWS: Threat of Gun Ban continues to Drive Strong Sales
3/31/2009
While a 1994 ban on assault weapons was allowed to expire in 2004, gun owners and enthusiasts are worried that under the Obama administration the ban could be revived. How do we know gun owners worried? They’re talking with their pocketbooks.
A shortage in semi-automatic weapons and ammo, due to gun enthusiasts snapping them up at a rate manufacturers can’t keep up with, has got stores scrambling to bring in more stock before the ban becomes reality.
“After the election, where you have a change of parties to a more liberal side, I would say I guess the conservatives want to protect what they feel might be taken away from them, either through a tax, or an all-out ban," Jere Jordan, a general manager for Midsouth Shooters Supply in Clarkville, Tennessee, told BusinessWeek.
FBI firearm background checks went up more than 31 percent from November 2008 to January 2009, compared to the same time the year before.
Some retailers, like Frontier Arms in Cheyenne, Wyoming, began rationing sales as a way to keep up with the demand for assault weapons and ammunition, according to the BusinessWeek report.
“You know there's something wrong when I've got little old ladies coming in buying 5,000 rounds of .22 shells," Becky Holtz, co-owner of Frontier Arms, said.
