Gunsmith Iowa City Area

I bought a muzzleloader the other day and found that the drilled and tapped portion of the gun for the scope base is messed up. It seems half the threads are missing and the bolts for the base, which I now have two separate bases specifically for the gun, won't go in. It is almost like they didn't do it quite right.

I could take the gun back to the store, but after talking to them it sounds like a hassle to get a new gun since I bought the last one. They have a few at other stores but they are all display models. I thought if I could simply have it tapped properly maybe I wouldn't need a new gun. On the other side of it, if they don't do a great job, maybe I will never have tight scope bases.

Not sure what to do.

I'd rather deal with a hassle of getting it replaced instead of dealing with a gun that won't ever shoot straight because of screwed up tapping. What's wrong with the display models? They have finger prints on them, they haven't been shot.

There is a gun shop on the west end of cedar rapids that is really good. I think the owners name is Arlan? Sports Outfitters 5717 16th Ave Sw, Cedar Rapids

This one was a display model too. Basically they had a black / stainless one and a camo / stainless one. The black / stainless barrel was all scratched up so I had them switch stocks with the other. I will probably just go through the hassle and get a new one.

I know its a long way from Iowa City, but I have 2 top notch gunsmiths (world renowned custom gunmakers) in AZ that do all of my work. You'd have to ship it (to me or them directly), but they could fix it no problem. I can call either of them on your behalf if you want.
