Gut Shot Help!

Shot a buck a ten yards broadside, clean passthru, found arrow immediately, haven't looked for blood. He jogged of with tail down toward a ravine with a pond in it.

Anyone have any comments or advice?

Leave him overnight, and head towards the pond in the morning. I bet you find him near the water. Good luck, and keep us updated.

If you are sure it was a gut shot, DO NOT try to recover until tomorrow AM. Did you recover the arrow?? Stomach matter or deep red blood (liver) ?? High, low or middle (vertically). Hopefully the buck will bed down in that ravine and be there in the morning waiting for you. Others on this site are more knowledgeable than me but I imagine they will concur with most of what I have said. You may even want to wait until mid-morning to go after him.

Good luck and let all of us know how it turns out.

Deciding to wait untill morning was your best decesion. More than likley you will find him close to your hit and dead in the morning if you didn't bump him. Like stated previously look at or towards water sources if you have problems tracking. Realize it's possible he could still be alive in the morning so go slow, and quiet. I would glass ahead and be ready for a follow up shot untill you know he is dead. Good luck!

I agree with the others, hit one back and I slept in and went after him about 9:00 (after shooting him around 4:00 the previous evening). Bumped the deer and couldn't get another one in him, saw the direction he went and recovered him at 2:00, 22 hours after the shot. Wasn't my proudest moment, but I was happy to recover him. Let him lay for as long as you can stand it and like CI said, glass ahead and be ready to put another one in him. Look near the water sources and in every thick spot you can, remember if he is dead at 9:00 in the morning he will be dead at noon, wait it out.

Sleep in, eat breakfast, watch some Sportscenter, then maybe go after him around 9 or 10.

So did you find him this morning? Hopefully he wasn't to far if you let him go like the others said he will probably be next to the pond waiting for you today....

I did about the same thing this year myself. Shot the deer at 7:40A, went back at 1:30P and jumped him 20 yards from where I last saw him. Let him go and found him the next morning about 200 yards away.

I thought 5 or 6 hours was enough time and it wasn't. I was very relieved to find him yet the next morning after almost screwing it up. Wait overnight at a minimum.
