I just have to share the "Outdoor Life Network" type hunt I had last evening with the ML. Took off a little early from work and made it to my hunting ground around five pm. A quick survey revealed that the neighbor had picked his corn but the corn on our property was still standing. The picked corn has solid timber to the south and I walked the timber edge checking sign and found numerous fresh scrapes and paths coming out of the timber into the corn field. You can't hunt this timber until the corn is out, there just isn't any easy way to get to this patch of timber. Wind was out of the southeast so I set up 10-15 yards into the timber west of the main trail complex. The sun goes down and I haven't seen anything, so I move to the edge of the corn field and immediately spot a small buck coming from the west. I figure he's going to scent me before he gets in range and sure enough about 100 yards out he stops and starts sniffing and then trots into the timber. At the same time I see movement to the east, a doe has magically appeared out of the standing corn 300 yards to my north east. I'm glassing her and another doe pops out of the corn on the run with a nice buck on her tail. She's running all over the field trying to lose the buck. I'm kneeling there just on the edge of the timber praying to God, have them run over here, please, there's only a few minutes of legal shooting time left. And by God if they don't come running straight towards me. At about 50 yards she peels to the right, stops and stares at me, the buck on her tail does the same. Both are standing there broadside at about 50 yards. The cross hairs settle on the buck and I pull the trigger. He took off at a dead run across the field and I watched him stumble and pile up. It was almost like the thing was scripted, I couldn't of asked for a better hunt. I did have a heck of time hoisting that big bastard into the pick-up though. That effort would of been something seen on MAD tv or Comedy Central.
The shot placement was one of my best, the saboted .451 260 grain Nosler Partition HG really did a number on lungs and top of the heart. The entry wound was impressive, the exit less so. I'm very happy with the performance of my T/C Omega and Bushnell 3200 1.5-4.5 scope. I'm just amazed at how everything turned out so well. I love watching a deer go down after a good solid hit, it makes for easy tracking.
