Hang Fire - Scott Archery Lil Goose Release

Anyone ever have any problems with these releases catching onto their string loop and then "hang firing". What I mean is when you hit the trigger the release opens, yet the string loop catches on the hook with a delayed shot. This has happened 5 or 6 times on me now and tonight it finally cost me big. I should of thrown it away the first time it ever did it last turkey season. It is officially about 50feet away from where I sat tonight in about 10 inches of snow and I don't think I will ever look for it again.

Anyways, tonight I thought I would give it one last hurrah before late muzzloader season. I know its already muzzleloader season but I had a piece of public that has a small corn plot on it that you can't shoot more than 25 yards so I thought I would bring my bow.

I was set up and right away saw a button buck, a 6 pt, and a doe file by at 15 yards. Then a little later I had two black labs cut my track about 300 yards away and come right to the base of my tree. After the second tree step I threw at them they finally left.

About 20 minutes later 4 does filed by at 15 yards and were feeding below me. Then about 10 minutes later I see another deer coming. I pull up the binos and to my suprise a 150s deer is coming right down the trail. A good 10 with some junk on his brows. At 15 yards broadside as he munched on some corn I settled the pin right behind the shoulder touched off the release and nothing for about a second. Confused when I hit the release and it didn't go, I quickly moved the bow and then it fired. The arrow sailed halfway across the county and the buck bolted. I couldn't believe it, that just did not happen on a 150s, during late season on public ground. Anyways after he left, I hooked the bow back up and pulled it back about 3 inches and touched off the release. The same thing happened again!!

Needless to say I will never find the release again and was wondering what everyone recommends as a good release?

Well, that is a drag. My girlfriends release was acting up this fall, and I thought it was all in her head. I then paid more attention after she complained more, and it needed some penetrating fluid shot in it. Works awesome now. It was really hanging up.
Now, for a great release, I really like the TruBall Short-n-Sweet. The only thing negative about it; it doesn't flip under your coat sleeve out of the way for climbing a tree and hanging sticks/stand, so it is always put on once I am up in the stand. It comes standard in leather buckle, and is a nice, crisp release.

This might help ya with some other popular ones

Sorry to hear that Mike. That sucks. I have only been shooting a release for about 3 years and I love my Tru-Ball Cyclone.

I shoot the same release and had the exact same thing happen last week on a deer I had at 10 yards. Perfect chance...hang fired and I have no idea where my arrow is. Somewhere in the middle of a 40 acre chisel plow field. Never even saw it off the string....missed by at least 50 yds:mad:. I will be getting a new release as well. I have had this happen before in the summer, but thought nothing of it. Now that it has happened in the tree I will be trying something new. I like replacing my release every couple years anyway. Its seems they loose there "tightness" over time.

Sorry to hear about that Mike, i feel better now, b/c mine occurred on a fawn.:D

I am glad I am not the only one that has had this problem DOR. In fact you just made my day. Everyone I have talked to today has called me crazy and that I am FOS. It was the wildest thing at the worst time ever. Thanks for the recommendations guys.

I'll take them. A little oil from time to time in that little roller thing in the release and they will be good as new. Your next release might have same or different problem. Scott releases are top notch releases.

I must agree with 150 Class, Scott makes a great release.

I have been shooting the Scott Release for 5 years now and it has performed flawlessly. I also practice a bunch thru out the year.

I do put a drop of vegetable oil on the moving parts several times a year to keep it lubed up.

I had a similar problem, but sent the release back to the company and they sent me brand-new one, no questions asked. However, I have since gone to a TruBall Diamond Pro, but I would recommend Scott releases to anyone! Calipers are just not my thing anymore....

I think you're crazy and FOS Mike.

Seriously though, that whole scenario sucks and I did laugh at your expense. Better luck next time.

ive used the little bitty goose or whatever its called for almost 5 years and have never had a problem, even after last year when it got alittle rusty inside from all the huntin in the rain, no issues. that sucks about your miss, id be a mad sob too.

Scott releases are great releases and I love this one when it works. I just don't like the design of the little goose. It has a flat side and a sharp hook side to make the jaw. The string is getting caught in the jaw side when this happens, if I moved to a release that has two hooks so there isn't a flat edge it could never fail.

Another thing that happened that night was my arrow rose about 4 inches off the rest when I drew on the buck and on my practice draw when I first got in the stand. My D-loop must of slid down a bit putting too much pressure on the knock causing it to rise when I pull back. With the increased angle on the D-loop maybe this is why it caught on that hook. The release jaws opened, so the release opened like it should but the D-loop just sat on the hook until I did the WTF move and it shot.

Thanks for the comments guys.

Sorry about your misfortune, but I gotta say... You wonder why every nonresident in the country wants to come to iowa.....

Public 150 class, only in Iowa.
