harvest recovery problem

Well I made my first kill of the season. I was sitting in my stand minding my own business when this squirrel spotted me. He spent most of 20 minutes barking at me. He kept moving closer and got within 20 yards. It was a straight on qaurtering away shot with on branch covering his vitals. I waited for what seemed like for ever for him to take one more step. When he did I let the arrow fly. He went flying out of the tree and the barking stopped. My shot was a little far back so I stayed in my stand not to scare him. I watched as he made his way up a big oak where he layed down. The problem is its about 25 feet up. I will head out first thing tommorow to attempt to make my way up that tree. There are no branches to climb so it could be a tough recovery. I hope to post a harvest photo tommorrow.

Well no luck.

I found a board in the acerage to make it to the first branch. Then I climbed up to crotch he was laying and there was piles of blood. There is no way he survived. There was a nest up further that i couldn't make it to but there wasn't any blood going up the tree. Either he fell out and something had him for lunch(i didn't get out there until 2:00 had to work) or he made it up to the nest without bleeding on the tree. I found my arrow cover with blood from top to bottom. I searched all around and found nothing. I will hunt it tommorrow maybe I'll spot him.

Were you shooting expandables? On tough critters like that you gotta go with a good cut on contact broadhead. Good luck in your search... you think he'll make book?

I lost one like that once. Keep your chin up, it happens to anyone that has hunted tree rats for very long.

My guess is a bobcat smelled him and had a nice snack while perched on the limb.

Well I am pretty sure he would have made book. He was a hawg. I used used a montec G5. I knew sooner or later I would lose one even with all the practice. It has been a long weekend but I think I will have to face it hes gone. I just need to get back in the stand and hunt. It will be hard after losing a world class trophy like that one, but I know I have to.
