Hawken Sugestions

I want to build a .50 caliber hawken and was wondering if anyone has done this before. I was also wondering if anyone has any sugestions about what kind of kit to buy. I live in central Minnesota so i am close to "Track of the Wolf" which i have heard good things about but i can't afford a $600 kit right now. I'm just a poor college kid with a truck, mortgage and a dog but i still want to build a quality firearm. If anyone has any sugestions or advise on this project it would be greatly appreciated. I think i can fit this project in somewhere between framing, wiring, and sheetrocking my basement this summer and fall.

Thanks Rudd. Track of the wolf would be by far the best bet for an authentic Hawkin reproduction. But as said they are pricey. Original J & S Hawkins were all equiped with steel furniture and there are few kits out there that aren't brass. It makes a good looking gun but not authentic in appearance. With that said there are quite a few inexpensive kits out there to look at. Check out this link to Dixie Gun Works. Dixie
Several different ones to choose from there.
Another option is to check out pawn shops and gun shows. Occasionally a good deal can be found at those places.
When building your kit, sometimes a trip to a museum to look at some originals is a good idea. Look close at the lines of the stock to give you an idea as to how much wood to remove from your's.
Have fun building whatever you decide on. Jay

Thanks for the advise. I really like the track of the wolf stuff and they are so close but i just can't spend that kind of money now or on a first project. How are the T/C kits? Are they of better quality say than the Dixie or Traditions? I also want a firearm that i can shoot with and take deer or elk hunting.

I just got a new Cabelas catalog and it has kits for about $240 but the same rifle finished is only $30 higher. Unless you just really want to build your own you should check out the Lyman trade rifles. Good looking guns that shoot great. I have shot a lot of squirrles with my 50 cal Lyman.

The thing is i really want to build it myself. I think i'm leaning more towards the track of the wolf stuff now. I figure i can buy the pieces as i can afford them and end up with a true replica and a very good quality firearm. Has anyone ever built one of the Track guns? Is this something that i should be attempting on my first try? I looked at some of the other kits and it almost seems to simple like finish the stock and put it together. With the Track stuff i think there is a little more involved but i don't know. I'm still pretty confussed
