He finally came home

Well we have been trying to get our hands on one of the Legendary Whitetails for the last 5 years or so. The buck was found on our farm in IL in 1990 by a young man and his dad that were cutting bank poles for fishing. To make a long story short the deer has been sold twice (illegally) and finally confiscated by the IL DNR from Larry Huffman's Legendary Whitetails collection. No fault of Larry's since he had no clue that the rack had been purchased illegally originally but the IL DNR still confiscated it from him.

Anyhow our long journey to get the buck back ended in December with the IL DNR saying that we could not have him to display as it was part of their Wall of Shame collection. However, before Larry passed away my brother was able to get a replica and it arrived a few weeks back. Impressive rack, just hope that Gene pool is still floating around.

Thats weird I was just lookin at the buck like yesterday. didn't they call it the Lobster Claw drop? Thing is a beast. Hopefully some of his offspring are runnin around, maybe that hog you killed this year has a little bit in him.

Yea, its a great buck with a ton of character.

I did consider adding a replica of it to my "Wild Whitetails" display but had heard thru the grapevine that some legal issues were at stake so I decided to wait.

Now I'm hearing the same issues are coming up concerning the rights to the replica's and whether any more should be sold. Guess they figure that since Larry didn't rightfully own the deer then he didn't have the rightful authority to have replicas made.

I think I'll continue to wait on this buck and see how it all plays out.

does cabelas have a repo of him. Not trying to make fun but the first time i was in the owattona store i saw a buck that looks very similar. I yelled at my wife "Look at the meat sack on him". She looked and didn't hear the end of that for days.

Yes it is referred to as the Lobster Claw Buck and is a 217" Nontypical, with a mainframe 187" typical rack. The droptine is 15" long and it is crazy when you get an upclose look at it, it is approximately the size of a softball on the end. Anyhow, the legal issues have all been solved with the buck and the rights to the replicas are currently held by the Huffman.

FYI:

The droptine was created by an artist. There was a drop tine broken off at the beam.

I think this is a common misconception, the only part of the tine that was added was the rounded edge at the very bottom of the black on the droptine. Here is a picture of the deer right after it was found, I believe the final droptine measures just under 15" and as found it was 14 1/8 or somewhere along those lines
