Man dies after alleged assault of neighbor
GRAETTINGER -- A man assaulted his neighbor in her northern Iowa home and was fatally shot -- apparently by himself -- after the neighbor escaped for help, authorities said Friday.
Tracy Thompson, 36, allegedly hit his neighbor in the head with a gun and assaulted her on Thursday after reportedly stopping by her home to ask about hunting on her property, according to the Palo Alto County sheriff's office.
The victim, 56-year-old Kolleen Pattison of Graettinger, told authorities she heard a gunshot as she fled the home and saw Thompson fall. She drove Thompson's car to find help and was later hospitalized with head injuries, authorities said.
Preliminary findings indicate Thompson killed himself, but sheriff's officials said they will investigate further.
An autopsy has been ordered.
