healthier deer?

Maybe it's just me but I'm noticing deer just LOOK healthier this fall, both on cams and simply rutting around. EHD and the dry summers really had a lot of the deer in my areas ragged looking last fall.

And it seems like I'm seeing lots of young deer. My guess is EHD trimmed out the older class and the (twin) fawns have skewed the population towards the young side.

Day and night difference from the last couple of years i have seen more young deer this year than the last two combined, and some older bucks that look healthy this year. I have also seen more older bucks this year than the last two. Last year I found 10 bucks dead on one farm so i was a little nervous this year about seeing bucks but it looks like there are several on that farm this year.

Cattle finally look recovered from the drought of 2011-2013. Calves are as good as I have ever seen them. Lots of rain and vegetation growth and cooler summer helps a bunch.

I am betting the deer have reaped the same benefits.

But.... and old farmer once told me that if you have a bumper crop the winter will be heck!

I agree very much with the sentiments that the deer are looking healthier this year and that there seems to be a larger percentage than normal of younger deer in the herd, both does and bucks.

We have field dressed two bucks in the past week and the fat on them has been way more than normal, which is very good to see.

I agree with all of you. Much better looking deer this year.
I will second what Daver said. The fat on the one I cut up was more than I can ever remember on a buck. Especially on the hindquarters.
