Help with custom knife!!

I know that some of you guys are very talented in this department. I need some advice. I have plans to have 3 knives made this year. I have 3 main properties that I hunt and all 3 landowners are super awesome guys that let me come and go as I please and invite anyone, anytime, to their property. I feel as I own the places w/o having to pay for them. Well, I would like to give each of these landowners a custom knife. I plan on the handle of the knife being made from a shed that I have picked up on each one of these properties. I think the knives would be special to each guy knowing that their property helped create the knife.

Now for the dilema. I have spoken to one individual here in KC that I know who makes some incredible knives. Problem is, his prices START at $500. Is this the norm for a custom blade? What are my options? Can I buy a quality off the shelf knife and then have an antler handle made for it? Is that a lame idea? What size/shape shed works well for knife handles? I only have a few decent sized sheds from one of my properties.

As you can see, I have alot of questions as to how to get started with this. I got alot more ?'s but am tired of typing. /forum/images/%%GRAEMLIN_URL%%/grin.gif Maybe I just go the $500 route and will just have to do 1 landowner a year for the next 3 years.

Any tips/advice would be greatly appreciated. /forum/images/%%GRAEMLIN_URL%%/grin.gif

Thats a great idea to give them. I gave my landowner one of mine this year and out of all the gifts I've given him, this really was the best. He really enjoys it.

Check out this guy..... Sharp Decision Knives

I've known Jon since the early 70's and he's a great guy and is really making some awesome knives. Get his work now, because it is only going to get more expensive as he gets more known.

Wow! Thanks Jay. He's got some great stuff there at a price I can afford. The guy I know here in KC does all his blades that damascus style. Gorgeous, but pricey.

I have an old classmate that did knives for friend of mine for us in his wedding party. His name is Steve Rick. There is no pictures of knives on his site, but I know he does them for hunter that come in. He is located in Cimarron,New Mexico. Echantedcanyonsilversmiths.com

catalog code 8c2122

could earn you extra points, if it was handmade

there's some great looking knives on that site. I have a buddy that had a blade made from a buggy spring....it was unreal the edge that thing had. I want to make one myself. Great link.

I would definitely love to attempt to make them myself. Don't know if I am capable of making a quality finished product. But I will never know if I don't try, right?

I've never made one out of antler, just wood scales. I have some elk tines in the garage i've been saving to try and make knives out of. Maybe after i finish my basement and my 1 year old is in college, maybe then i'll have time.
